for chuffin hells sake. what the hell is wrong with these people. £30k is roughly 15% of the total playing budget for the majority of level 3 clubs. What is Caldy's plan? Nice touch for Turner though, what a laugh he's going to have milking the dosh

We will be discussing these characters in more detail in the not too distant future, i guess

Perhaps Caldy are dazzled at this bright new world order and at the number of players keen to accept their offers. I suspect few are lump sum such as Turner, more will be play/pay with a small retainer.

However, I suspect their current commitment is (only!!) about £100k - plus some larger salaries to whomsoever they consider to be key players

From the Blackheath website;
2009/10 Season
Club News | Mon 6th Jul 09
Posted by Simon Legg

Well here we go Thursday 2nd July 2009 brought the start of 2009/10 Pre-Season for Blackheath 1st Team Squad

Well here we go Thursday 2nd July 2009 brought the start of 2009/10 Pre-Season for Blackheath 1st Team Squad.

We go into a new league structure National League 1; our league will consist of 16 Teams and will take us as far North as Tyndale and as far South as Redruth. It will mean 30 League games in total. Although the additional 4 League games will put a lot of pressure on our squad we are very fortunate to have depth in the squad and our development teams that will give us cover.

We have had to say goodbye to some valued squad members;

Liam Wordley – Retired
Jimmy Stanford – Moved to Canterbury
Ken Aseme – Moved to California USA
Sam Smith & Chris York Harlequins – Esher
Will Mathews – Moved to Wasps
Harvey Biljon – Cornish Pirates

We would like to wish all these valued people the best for the future.

There are a number of new faces coming in, at the time of writing this there are 6 or 7 on pre-season trial with us. Also we are very close to signing Danny Caprice on a dual contract with us and the RFU.

We would also like to welcome;
Joe Bonner
Richard Lankshear
Tyson Lewis
Dave Jones
James Cleverly
Albertos Gava
Nick Van Moal

Steve Pope has been doing a tremendous job in liaising with all the London based Premiership clubs and will be in liaison for the coming season . He is in contact with them all regularly every week. There have been some interesting snippets of information coming out from them for the coming season:-

• Wasps - apart from James Honeyben (who has said he wants to play at Blackheath) all their loan players will go to London Scottish.
• Harlequins – their loan players will go to Esher
• London Irish – 2 backs and 1 forward will be joining us; Rob Herring, Marcus Watson and Jonathan Joseph
• Saracens –relations are very good and we are in dialogue.

We would like to congratulate Matt Leek for being appointed 1st Team Captain. When offered the role, Matt (in what will be a busy year for him getting married in December), said what a fantastic honour it would be and wild horses would not deter him from the role. Matt - we think will be an excellent leader of the team and we are really pleased he has accepted the challenge.
Tom Bason will be Vice Captain and we are confident that, with both Matt & Tom, the Club has two excellent men to lead us forward this year. We wish them the best for the season.

We are very luckily to have a good mix of youth and senior players such as Simon Legg, Alistair Vanner, Des Brett, Neil Dewale, Dave Allen, Matt Vaughan, Martin Olima, Shaun Moan who are all guys who have been at the Club for a number of years and understand the Club traditions and how we are trying to create a ‘club sprit ‘ . Our senior players committee bring a lot of positives to the management of our squad.

So on to the management - a big THANK YOU to Albert Patrick. Even before we start the season his underlying support and commitment to the club is inspiring.

I always used to feel that Harvey was surrounded by a very strong coaching team that helped him tremendously without much recognition. We are, I am , again surrounded by excellent people who:-

• Understand the Club history & traditions
• Understand the game and have a wealth of expertise
• Unreserved commitment

New faces in the coaching Team are :-
• Colin Ridgeway – 1st Team Manager
• Derek Coates - - Blackheathens Lead Coach
• Chris Jones – Coach

Our Pre –Season Games have only just been fixed and we look forward to seeing you at those games before we go to Stourbridge for our first league game in September.

• Sunday 16th August Away London Scottish
• Saturday 22nd August Away Richmond
• Saturday 9th August Home Rosslyn Park

I believe clubs are about the people in them.

Thank You

Yusuf Ibrahim

All this talk about Caldy with so called estimations of players salaries, which are in my opinion over the top!

Has everybody over-looked maccs summer signings, with the funding from manchester yet again disappearing, many manchester players will make the switch, along with other signings from around the league.....i would say that they at least match, if not exceed caldys spending.

Also, there havent been many rumours from the previous big spenders of this league, fylde, as of yet that is!

In the original radio series the town was called Spent.  Which is what Caldy appear to have done.Tongue

From this is Gloucestershire website;

CINDERFORD have strengthened their back line ahead of the new National One campaign with the double capture of Danny Pointon and Alistair Bressington from Stourbridge, writes Will Wood.

Scrum-half Pointon returns to Gloucestershire following spells at Guinness Premiership side Northampton Saints and fellow National One team Stourbridge after originally making a name for himself at St Peter's School.

The son of former Gloucester fly-half Dave Pointon, who is now in charge of PE at St Peter's, captained the school in their Daily Mail Cup win in 2006.

Pointon, 20, will put pressure on Cinderford's current number nine, captain, and top try scorer last season, former Sale Shark Paul Knight, with last year's understudy Charlie Simpson-Daniel now on loan at Moseley from Gloucester.

Pointon can also play at 10, as he did in the meeting between the two teams in March when he kicked 11 points as Cinderford won 37-31.

He has also represented England at Under-16, 18, 19 and 20 and once formed a half-back pairing with Wasps and England fly-half Danny Cipriani in 2004 for his county's age group.

Bressington used to play first-class cricket for Gloucestershire before being released in 2004 and turning his attention to rugby union.

The Kings School, Gloucester PE teacher once took a catch for England off Steve Harmison's bowling in August 2004, when acting as 12th against the West Indies to dismiss wicketkeeper Carelton Baugh after Grahame Thrope had broken a finger.

The 29-year-old now plays club cricket for Frocester.

He was second top points scorer in National Two last season with 250 points.

The former Newbury and Moseley player has also represented England Counties. He will compete with Danny Trigg, for the 15 shirt at Cinderford

I HAVE JUST HEARD from a well placed pal of mine working in the elite game that there are currently 80 players from last seasons pro teams without contracts for the forthcoming season.

Solution - outlaw 'dual regging' and then we can give out more contracts - albeit with lower salaries!

from: www.frenchrugbyclub.com re French rugby: "that 80 players in the Top 14 league have not yet been offered contracts due to economic downturn."

so, is this 160 elite players without clubs or the same story? French story posted about a week ago.

ES a slip of the keyboard I suspect.  I think that should read Canterbury (the club, not the kit supplier).
