That's the Twickenham effect. I've been to England matches and seen the same people wearing Ireland Scotland or Wales shirts - depending on who are England's opponents! The only opposition shirt they won't wear is South Africa!!

I suppose now that Harlequins are the only Premiership Club in London (courts controversy because Saracens are in the London Borough of Barnet but that's different!) it's inevitable that we lose people to them. I would claim bragging rights but, of course, we are not in London!

Our biggest factor was always Charlton to a lesser extent Millwall. I am not sure whether people will choose to go to OEs or vice versa if both are at home. I am led to believe our attendances were up this year following the switch to Well Hall but it has also been a fairly dry winter which also helps

I would say it's least noticeable at Esther, but sorry, the Hersham boys are just as much London as the rest.

The issue is at about the same level as each other at Rosslyn Park and Blackheath - and it doesn't feel specifically targeted against Coventry, just pro whichever London team is at home.

For Caldy it all depends if there is a clash with a local dog show because sometimes our supporter and his faithful hound go there instead of enjoying the dubious comfort of the wooden shack.

Being new to National 1 I am sure there will be a host of things Caldy will be keen to understand before the new season starts. I understand the club Secretary has done quite a lot of research on what is expected in National 1 and has already looked into how the club can ensure that the showers remain modestly warm for a good 5 minutes on match days, but there is still much to do.

Hopefully Caldy will have fixed up the wobbly leg on the popular bench seat before the start of the season so that one or two away supporters will have the chance to enjoy it as well.

It's a delight that Caldy will be in National One next season along with Fylde to represent NW rugby. Even more, to welcome you, BE, to our number ... I think. I'm sorry that when Fylde visits the wooden shack on the hill on 9th September that we're unlikely to have a similar contretemps between 'waterboys' that so amused everyone back in 2009. But maybe we could recreate it, rather like Skinner & Baddiel used to do on their Fantasy Football show years ago.

One thing BE. I just hope that you're not as verbally introverted as you used to be ...

Allan,

you will be pleased with some of the refurbishments that Caldy have carried out to the Wooden shack since Fylde's last visit. The gaffer tape and plastic wood which added such character to the structure have long gone and the various holes are now properly stopped up with wire gauze and bonding. It is now almost waterproof during a dry spell.

You will be pleased to know that Caldy have also made substantial refurbishments to the dressing rooms. The home team dressing room has been completely remodeled and is now a thing of beauty. As a nod to the past the 'away' dressing rooms still retain the patina of history which Nellie was so fond of, they are a bit more snug than you will remember but all the better to huddle together away from the biting wind.

The showers are still intermittent but when they are working they are now a touch better than tepid. Caldy were unable to do much about the pressure though, so if all 4 showers are on together it is still little more than an incontinent dribble I am afraid.

Two Caldy v Fylde clashes to look forward to ....I cannot wait.

So the showers are alledgedly better than Rosslyn Park who I am reliably informed maintain a consistent cold but the pressure is fine. Our retiring fly half Simon Whatling almost decided to not retire as Caldy was his fathers club and he said it would have been nice to play there in a league game.. If you travel outside the NW I am sure you will be welcomed at all grounds as we are a pretty friendly bunch in N1 bitch and moan obviously and we all have tinted glasses. You will have a great trip to Hull Ionians as according to Sid James the officials always get it wrong😭. Oh and don't believe a word about budgets as no one has a clue but we all have a good guess until it goes onto companies house then you can ask which players are lying about how much they get.

Thanks for the info Rabbie, but the talk of budgets has me in a bit of a spin........clearly we are dealing with grown up rugby clubs now. I am starting to think there may need to be some planning required in this league as it doesn't appear to me that dipping into the Christmas Party fund as and when required will cut it in this league.

It is with everyone strength in depth is the key and avoiding multiple injuries in key positions. Most teams will go through a crisis at some point in the season ours came after Christmas trying each week to patch up a front row and the market is so competive it is almost impossible to get someone in as clubs don't tend to release them even on loan. We also played the last 7 games without a scrum half as we broke 4 to long term injuries. I cannot remember ever being at Caldy so I am looking forward to it.

Rabble,
Allow me to welcome BE & Caldy to Nat 1 myself. Caldy is a great place to watch a rugby match. Looking forward to it.
Your comments regarding my appreciation of the officials are a little one sided. I do give credit where it is due. Sadly, it is not due as often as I would like and, I am not on my own in that opinion.
For instance, when I was at Blackheath last season, one of the ass. ref's was awful and received as much stick from the home supporters as he did from me. Best wishes & see you in September.

BE,
As far as Rugby budgets go in Nat 1, there is definitely a 'them and us'. I expect you may join the 'us'.
