why couldn't they have merged the Premiership and Championship cups together?. that would've made the cup a far more enticing product. as fellow posters have commented. I love how they try and sell the cup as a good thing on today's press release. Geoff Irvine's point about the cup "Reigniting old local rivalries" is just plain wrong. if that is the best they could come up with then its a disgrace.

""The Championship Cup will add an additional layer of competition and will also reignite old local rivalries"
Unbelievable.

If they had said old rivalries it would have been a little closer here!  At least we generally have high scoring entertaining matches.

Tough League start for Jersey with 4 away games in first 6 fixtures, with keen as mustard new boys Coventry first up.  Potential major banana skin for the Reds there.....Not much revenue coming in for a couple of months although the first home game in September is against London Irish when hopefully it may still be T shirt and shorts weather. That could confuse the Irish.... Hope they will bring several hundred supporters as they did two years ago , when St Helier was positively green at times.  And that we do the business on them once more.  Asking a lot though when our boys are still getting to know one another on the pitch.
Not very keen on the new Cup competition....... I can't see big crowds turning up to watch the early games when we play Scottish, Richmond and Ealing twice - Jersey clearly part of Greater London now....
Come on Jersey........

Very naughty to pitch ealing against irish 1st up. Irish don't need the rfu to help them win the league.they may just be good enough anyway. However ealing may just beat irish ,now that really would upset the powers that be

Just when you thought last season with the removal of the play-offs could get any worse... they managed to succeed!

Groups based on Geography...

Group 1 - Coventry, Knights, Nottingham, Carnegie

Group 2 - Trailfinders, Jersey, Scottish, Richmond

Group 3 - Blues, Pirates, Hartpury, Irish

Surely the "makes sense" scenario would have been a swap between Jersey and Blues?

2 Blues players are thoroughly excited about the cup competition... not!

So we now have a B & I Cup minus the Irish & Welsh sides - fantastic

Given how much supporters of Championship sides detested the B & I Cup, this new competition will be even less supported than anything previously, under the guise of a B & I Cup. How the RFU can polish a and claim success never fails to amaze.

I think the inclusion of Jersey in the group containing Ealing and the two Richmond based teams is due to their proximity to Heathrow Airport rather than any other consideration.

Last time I went to Jersey it was from Gatwick. Still relatively near I suppose. Whizz down the M23 and after a struggle through the traffic on the M25 and M3 and youโ€™re at the RAG. For Ealing crawl over Kew Bridge, consult your satnav and you arrive , fresh as a daisy.

The train connection between Gatwick & Richmond is brilliant and can take as little as 40 minutes except when they put on a replacement bus service from Clapham when it can take best part of three hours and it would be quicker to get from Exeter to Penzance! I'm happy to watch rugby wherever Jersey play but I'll miss the trips to Ireland and Wales and still hope one day to get to Kelso et al in the borders. I hope every club treats the cup seriously and field full strength teams but its probably wishful thinking.

The cup competition is completley pointless and will be a second team contest at best . . the crowds will be awful . . but if this the best the RFU can do heaven help us. They should follow some of the innovative ideas that Rugby League employ . .  what about a Big Smash weekend somewhere with 3 matches in one day . . just something to prevent this competition being moribund? At least first team players will get a mid season break.
Run with it

Most unlikely. They prefer home games on Sundays.

Trains in the London area are dreadful at the moment. Cancellations and delays are rife. Sometimes I change trains three times to get ten miles, and walk the 15 minutes between East and West Croydon, only to miss the connection.

All the RFU have given clubs in the Championship is the latest version of the B & I Cup less the Irish Provinces & the Welsh sides and called it something else. What more did you expect from the dysfunctionals?

The B&I Cup or whatever it has become is whatever the clubs make of it. I predict Irish or Ealing will win the league and I understand that play offs are not required so the other clubs should focus on the cup and try to win it. No obviously bad teams this year so perhaps relegation is a more interesting topic.

I love watching rugby in the Championship and am a massive advocate of it, introducing new people every year.  But I'm a bit "meh" about this season to be honest.  The new cup competition looks potentially awful, with a ridiculous gap in the league and spread of fixtures - two trips to Penzance in 3 weeks for The Blues.  Then a two horse race for the title/promotion it is difficult to get really excitied about it.

And I'm very disappointed with Geoff Irvine for towing the RFU party line with those quotes, feel he is not standing up for the league at all.
