Gotta charge our friends from Cov …….old fashioned tradition to move money east or west down the A45......likely f.o.c. for season ticket holders. Might have been an exception in recent years, but from memory we have always charged (a reduced price) for PSFs. Cov charged £15 adults for the reverse fixture last season which was a bit steep...…...a tenner would be OK.

Mose in full:

Caldy RFC 10th August 2019 Home 3pm
Llanelli RFC 16th August 2019 Away 7.30pm
Carmarthen Quins 17th August 2019 Away 3pm
Coventry Rugby 23rd August 2019 Home 7.30pm

FWIW (and I'm still not sold on playing Cov) that looks like a pretty balanced programme to me and the sort of one I might have come up with if playing "fantasy rugby pre-season DoR"! One near peer (Caldy, admittedly they've just gone through the trapdoor but they weren't far off us last season), couple of Welsh premier sides, and one against the level up.

PARFC's pre-season games:

Saturday 17th August - Taunton (A)

Sunday 25th August -  Exe Uni (H)

Saturday 31st August - TBC (H)

Sadly, no chance of any giant killing this year. PSFs v Champ sides of recent years have dealt some bad blows in terms of injury, so maybe not a bad thing after all. Easy on the travel budget as well...

And maybe we can show Taunton where they should be in terms of winning Nat 2 and getting us a decent derby game in Nat 1.
Come cheer up, my lads - 'tis to glory we steer!

Guess that most of the pre season friendlies start this coming weekend, but suspect there were a few last Saturday?
Mose entertained Caldy…. I wasn't there, but think it was 8 or 9 tries to 1 in Mose's favour...…..slightly different result from the nerve jangler in the final game of last season. Accept that PSFs are only an amuse bouche but at least we scored 4+ tries as opposed to what seemed to be 3 tries at every opportunity last term.

I was there and I'm not sure... it was definitely either 45-5 or 40-5 though. However, as I said on our message board it's hardly fair to keep score in a match where you're playing in "thirds". Also worth bearing in mind neither side was kicking to the posts for penalties (line-outs only), or taking conversions. Mind you, in the wind we had, most airborne balls would have ended up 500 yards away on the Yardley Wood Road so probably for the best...

FWIW I thought the first team we put out was the best, the second somehow managed to have some greater standout individual performances, and the third side was dominant but no flash.

Caldy on the other hand brought plenty of supporters, who I enjoyed chatting to, and played well - although I couldn't get much of an handle on whether they were changing people around as much as we were.

You're not alone in not being sure on the scoreline.
The Wirral Globe headline it as 40-5 but then name check Jamal Gass-Clarke scoring the 9th try.....

which is why I said I wasn't sure - I was convinced as I left the ground that we'd scored 9 tries, but then social media was giving out both 40 and 45 LOL

It is difficult to assess how you do this early in the pre season especially if your opposition are not a full strength . Caldy competed on well on the day especially as they had 9 1st XV players missing and a total of 24 not available , holiday or work commitments (some guys get all their Saturday shifts in in the summer to be available when the league starts) with two young props playing the scrum was always going to be under pressure and the pack as a whole was under powered which meant the Caldy lived off scraps. The wind also had an effect with Birmingham dominating the first 30 minutes.

I'd agree with all of that, which is why I said it was hardly fair to keep score in my post. However, for the sake of my own sanity more than anything else I'd like to get to the bottom of it!

I very much enjoyed my day out at Moseley it was good craic at a great venue .

Caldy were not quite at the races and I think possibly the knowledge that they were so under strength may have just affected a few players who were perhaps not quite as on it as they normally are.

However having said that I was very encouraged by the performances from some very young and inexperienced players who have never stepped out at this level. They could have crumbled but they didn't and for a lot of them it will have really spurred them on and given them a deal of confidence that they are not too far away.

The match identified areas where Caldy are rusty and I am sure the coaches will be addressing these in coming weeks but in my mind it also identified that a number of young players who have previously been playing mostly colts rugby have the real capability to very quickly step up to 1st xv level. That is very encouraging.

Accordingly I completely disagree with the Wirral Globe's assertion that it was a humiliation for Caldy. To travel with a squad shorne of what I reckoned would be 10 (rather than 9) of last season's match day squad and to be able to compete for 90 minutes without being over run, against as strong a side as Moseley was a big positive for me.

I have seen a lot of real drubbings in my time..............this wasn't one of them. The players will be a lot better next time out even without being reinforced by returning senior players

Moseley looked handy and a cut above where they were at the end of last season. I think they will do well this year
