Great responses everyone! I’m actually firmly stuck to the fence on this. Our players want to play and many of them live in Central London so have been through a difficult lockdown. Yes, the Club is in Tier 2, I live 3 miles away and am in Tier 1 - thanks to the River Thames!!

I appreciate that it will be more difficult to get matches played in Tier 2 or 3 areas and even in Tier 1 areas managing spectators will be very difficult, although we can seat 150 socially distanced inside the Clubhouse for the Premiership Final so could have a small gate.

Players are not expecting to be paid for non-League matches. What we have done this summer is build a great camaraderie amongst them. The vibe is great, the fun and laughter immense and the work ethic outstanding. They just want to play the game they love. Whether they will get that opportunity sadly relies on an incompetent Government.

Just ensure they never vote for this government ever again

That's all well and good until you look at the alternatives!

There’s alternatives that I bet you’ve never even thought of. They might not be around now in plain sight but I’d expect alternatives to be available for everyone who don’t want to put a X next to Starmer or Johnson et al.

So Week 3 and another game bites the dust with a squad self-isolating.

The sight of using the Allianz Premier 15s as a Guinea Pig for untested rugby is clear to see.

This league should NEVER had started. No vaccine = no game

That’s correct. Owned by a businessman from Sheffield. Don’t suppose that prohibits crowdfunding though. I’m sure he will be very grateful for any help in these difficult times

Actually not true in the end, that was what was presented, voted for by the members and announced but we managed to re-structure it where we get the benefits of our benefactor (he was on the board prior so been with us a while) but remain a member owned club under the same governance as before - so a win, win in the end.

Which could mean we have seen the end of rugby as a vaccine is highly unlikely despite what some big pharmaceutical say. After 35 years we still have no vaccine for AIDS which is itself a coronavirus.
We are going to have to get used to living with the virus and taking precautions. If the Test and Trace system worked we would be happier but it doesn’t so we are stuck with this complete mess.

So haven’t all these people who’ve caught covid so far been taking precautions?  What do you mean get used to living with it?

Some will have taken precautions, sadly a lot haven't as they are in social groups that are unlikely to have serious issues.

The only way rugby will re-start is either a vaccine or a different approach whereby people are free to choose how they live their lives.

I.e. People will be free to play rugby should they so wish and others will be free to watch these games if they wish to.

Have you a link to the HIV bring a Coronavirus?

The only other Coronavirus I am aware of (active in UK) is about four strains bundled in the ‘common cold‘. It was the common cold which killed many native populations as European explorers discovered places. I believe it’s why contact with Amazonian tribes is banned/limited as they have no protection to something most of us accept as part of life.

It’s why, I believe it is suggested many of us need, or even have had a limited exposure so we begin herd immunity concept. However a full load, which some are getting is a life threatening thing, which is why hospitalisation is occurring.

I think the game changer has to be, if they can be done cheaply and reliably the under an hour tests. Matchday teams meet under protocols, are tested say 90 mins before kick off. Get clearance.
At say Championship level it might mean asking an extra £1 admission fee for matchday testing of players, and crowd safety protection (temperature checks?).

How testing costs are met lower down leagues might be reflected in membership fees?

Every two weeks Private Eye arrives with a full page written by MD, a senior consultant in the NHS. It is from there that I took the reference to AIDS being a coronavirus, like SARS, MERS and COVID-19 which that excellent BBC article explains is like SARS.

These viruses and many other diseases come from our interference with the natural world. If you haven’t watched David Attenborough’s powerful programme A Life on Our Planet you really should to understand the damage we are doing to our home.

Sadly thinking this is Saturdays until September 2021. Although hopefully cricket might welcome us back in April.

Talking of 'glimmers', does this provide a small amount of hope that things are moving on?
