Glad to hear that Birkenhead Park are giving the youth a chance this season. During pre season it has been good to see young lads like Matt Mckenna (19), Lol Thomas (19), Dan Rich (18) and Jack Lavin (18) getting run outs and I understand that they will be given their chance this season. Also good to see that other youngster Shaun Gallagher (57) play a full 80 minutes for the first team on saturday. The ex Waterloo and Orrell man has decided he is still good enough to mix it with his grand children. I understand he wants to show the kids how it used to be done.

I thought Jack Lavin was a Caldy player. When did he go to Birkenhead Park?

He was training with Caldy throughout the summer and played in a few games for them during the pre season including against Longton and was a member of the Caldy team that won the Halifax 7's. He looked pretty useful and I know that Caldy had high hopes for him and they expected him to push Rich Vasey hard for the 10 slot in the 1st team.

I presume he has been assured of a starting position at 10 for Birkenhead Park and has gone for that reason?

jack has been training with parka few times over the summer but has not played. I was under the impression that he had not decided on where he will be playing his rugby but i am not in the know really with player coming and goings.

all the other young lads that played put on a good show and would expect them to be involved in some part at least in the coming matchs.

Gallagher wasnt too bad either!!!

It sounds as though Jack Lavin has kept his options open and has trained at both Birkenhead Park and Caldy over the summer. If I am correct I think he has come up through the Caldy youth system so if he has now decided on Park that will be a bit of a dent for Caldy.

Is it a realistic possibility that Lavin could leapfrog Handley and Hall and grab the 10 starting spot?

Im sure jack will not have been assured of a starting birth. I would however fully expect him to be involved once his have proved his fitness after what i am led to believe was a minor operation. This may mean a reshuffle in the back line with biff handley playing 15 a lot towards the end of last season. It will mean good competition for places in the back line.

For the record i think shaun is actually only 50.
