I don't doubt any of that. I just think the headwinds are now too strong.

I have to agree very strongly on this, look at what Irish have spent, unless something goes bang at one of the premiership share clubs (which given the influx of money is looking less likely) I can't see anything changing for a number of years with the relegated club going straight back up.

Not that it’s a reason to ring fence, but when was the last time a side was promoted to the Premiership that hadn’t been there before? I suspect it was London Welsh and Exeter before that?
What are the main objections against a 14 team Premiership with 1 up 1 down?

The whole point of sport is that there should be winners and losers. Promotion and relegation are essential to provide motivation both ways. Otherwise the risk is that everything becomes an exhibition.
All this is obvious to anyone. However money and vested interests get in the way.
None are so deaf as those who will not hear(or something like that).

Available money would be split 14 ways not 12, although the team without a Premier share would get less.

Ealing's departing players list announced today:

Academy Players:

Max Davies - not much to say on the Academy lads.

Ben Williams - - not much to say on the Academy lads.

First Team Players:

Guy Armitage - massive disappointment. I heard that there were some injuries involved, but he just couldn't crack the squad. An electric attacker who was a liability in defense.

Matt Beesley - didn't make an impression

Luke Carter - Hartpury - nasty injury opened the door for him to be passed on the depth chart. A quality 9 who I wish well.

George Edgson - Doncaster Knights - no particular impression.

Ryan Foley - got a lot of opportunity, and seemed on the verge of forming a good partnership with Willis before Burns broke out in the second half of the season. Hope he lands somewhere.

Will Harries - A club legend. A lot of people don't realize this, but he was a 3 cap full Welsh international. Amazing under the high ball, great at finding space where there didn't look to be any, and had the funniest running style I've ever seen - legs everywhere. I've heard he's retiring.

Ben Landry - A solid season marred by a nasty arm injury. Focusing on international duty with the US in the world cup next year. I hope he'll consider coming back after that, but I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up in MLR. Seemed a bit homesick when I talked to him (we're from the same part of the US).

Laurence May - Honestly thought he was signed up for another year. A very good Championship quality fly-half, but squeezed out by Bell, Shingler, and Willis.

Jack O’Connell - Didn't make much of an impression.

Rohan O’Regan - Gutted not to see Rohan back. A really very large man, and he was so hard to bring down that he often opened up space through the middle as three or four men were needed to bring him down. Good shove in the scrum too.

Sam Olver - Doncaster Knights - A lot of heart, but just too small, even for a 10. I saw him get run over multiple times leading to tries or big gains. Very quick wrists.

Jordan Onojaife - Bedford Blues - I've already said what I think of him, and won't beat a dead horse.

Howard Packman - Didn't seem to be able to beat out anyone on the wing.

Mark Tampin - Played well, but I understand that there were some real attitude issues, and he ended the season on the suspension list.

Segundo Tuculet - Ealing amended their list last night to clear up his omission. I had very high hopes for the Argentinian international, but he didn't seem to be able to catch on in the first team. Great pace, but bad decision making in a limited sample size. In particular, against Irish at the Madstad he had a break and could have passed to Rayn Smid for a walk-in try, but held on and knocked on in the tackle. Smid, the team captain, was highly critical of that decision - probably didn't help his chance to stick around.

Hmm...Ealing's announcement said that he was going to transition into work, so presumably part-time?

Ealing now carrying 38 players - I'm guessing that they'll sign a few more before the start of the season.

Backs = 7
Backrow = 6
Centres = 4
Fly Half = 2 (with Laurence May out, who had previously been announced as re-signed)
Hooker = 3
Prop = 7!
Scrum half = 3
Second Row = 6

Is it not Fly Half = 3 now that Willis is staying?

The Ealing fly half situation has become a bit farcical, Laurence May back to Pirates perhaps? He definitely re-signed, I'm sure of it.

Tampin off to Newcastle I think.

I'd like to see Laurence back with us at Pirates,  he was very popular here - classy player and a very good bloke; but it's unlikely because we've signed Harry Davey from Leeds.

I only count Willis and Shingler? I've counted Tommy Bell as primarily a back.

There's logic in that. Given that he can play at fly-half it probably means that Ealing don't need to recruit another one. Presumably there is also an academy flyhalf who might be given some game time at least in some of the Cup matches.

Doncaster have added Reiss Cullen for the 2019/20 season after the scrum-half signed a two-year-deal. The 22-year-old joins from Bristol Bears,

Is the exclamation intended as a comment on 7 being a high number of props G? I'd expect most clubs to want 3 loose- + 3 tight-heads, especially if match-day squads are 23 as seems likely. Few players can genuinely play both sides, so 7 doesn't seem way high from a club with one of the larger budgets...
