Haliford - they were rubbish. end of
ask a chelsea fan, or any other top club, what they would prefer; england to win the world cup, or chelsea to be european champions - they go for the latter as long as club comes before country it will be same old, same old

Being a rugby supporter and of the opinion that real men play rugby, Englands abject performance didn't worry me over much. It seems to be a natural consequence though of stuffing clubs with overseas players at the expense of bringing on youngsters and supporting the game at lower levels. Hope the oval ball game doesn't go the same way. |

what is it about South Americans and hand ball - they must want to play rugby. Surely penalty try equivalent - not penalty....................and why am I unhappy about Ghana - underdogs?

Chaps, it's Halliford - 2 x l and no a or x!! Nowhere near Halifax and definitely not a wendyball fan. I'm worried by Champion's point about fans caring more about their Club than their Country. That seems to be creeping into rugby now or was it that until that last game against Oz, Johnno's team was underperforming so much that nobody wanted to admit being an England supporter?

Various reasons - cannot see matches because they're on Sky - and no, I don't fancy going down to the pub or club just to watch England in cramped surroundings. Better to watch matches in the open air. Certainly for last season, National 1 was more exciting and dynamic than watching turgid England - when did we last have a team with panache? And finally, those ticket prices at Twickenham (let alone the pre-pured beer with curly chips and dubious pig part burger), who other than media chaps
with free ticket, can afford to watch? |

Fair points, FL! However Six Nations matches are on BBC and you can turn the sound off to stop Davies squeaking and Moore belly-aching.
Interestingly matches at National 1 and down do seem more interesting, often because teams can create mis-matches more easily than at international level, thus creating scoring opportunities, most of which are taken. Tries have become scarce at international level, unless you're a Kiwi!

In fact, I'd swap a World Cup win for Redruth getting and staying in the Championship using just local players. In fact, I'd swap any England rugby victory for... er.... a bag of jam doughnuts? (I'm easily pleased) |

True - perhaps it's the tediousness of England rugby - I'd rather see England win the World Cup than England play rugby in their current style
backhanded compliment there old chap!!
So it all comes down to why do we watch a match? Is it to support our team/country or to be entertained? As players (of my age) we played for the craic, now I go to support Cambridge but also expect to be entertained - and to be fair to the management team over the last 6+ years that's what has happened. But when Jonno and Specsaver get in the England driving seat it all seems to fall flat on it's hazelnut - so Club first - for value for money England will have to learn what it's like to pass the ball along the threes to the wing. I watched Barbarians v Cambridge University (Mike Gibson - so probably mid 70s) and each pass was made on the next footfall arriving at the wing about 5 seconds after it left the scrum half. What happens now........15 seconds deciding which prop will make 1 yard PS Halliford looks a good place to work.............!! http://www.hallifordfilmstudios.co.uk/ Edited by FoghornLeghorn - 04 Jul 2010 at 19:30 |

FL - good point about entertainment. Esher supporters thoroughly enjoyed the two seasons when we won National 1 - fast, flowing rugby with lots of tries. Often the same supporters were critical of the team in the first two Championship seasons when we were defending more, scoring less frequently and losing more, despite the fact that often, they were playing better rugby and, obviously had much tougher opposition who also played better rugby.
There are levels in rugby - International, GP and, to some extent, the Championship, are built around highly fit players skilled in personal and structured defence. In the National Leagues player mismatches start to appear and as the levels get lower, gaps appear and mistakes increase. That often creates more entertaining rugby. The key at the top level is to force your opponents into mismatches and to make mistakes. It's much easier to score that way than simply to be much better than an excellent defence. That's why we talk about quick ball, team pace, etc. as those are the things that create mismatches and cause mistakes. I think Brian Smith has always understood that, I'm not sure Johnno has - he remembers the England packs of old wearing people down to force those mistakes but it doesn't happen any more. FL, it would be a nice place to work if I worked there! Sadly I live near there and have to take a very slow train into London every day!

You've got more chance of the former, Gwella ![]() I'd sooner see a Cornish side in the Premiership (ideally 'Druth )than an England World Cup win. I think the thing that puts a lot of people off is that true rugby supporters never get within a gnats crotchet of seeing a major international. ''Twickers'' can be a soulless place at the best of times, but when it's stuffed to the gills with hooray henry's and henrietta's, who would never attend a 'normal' rugby match and wouldn't know a ruck from a maul, then it's easy to see why folk get disillusioned. Also, it's not my national side... ![]() |

Couldn't agree more, and if Redruth ever got into the premiership I'll be there to support them, that is except when they were playing Launceston! As for Twickers I'd sooner be at Polson and watching some cracking rugby in Div 1. |

It's been fascinating how this thread has developed into 'I'd rather be watching National 1 than anything else (at the moment)'.
![]() I know this is the National 1 forum page, but even so I get the distinct impression that the quality of rugby at Level 3 is about right - just serious enough, but not enough to get too depressed when you lose (except to 'Druth!) ![]() Who do we have to speak to at HQ to persuade them that we've got it right? ![]() ..........so what's Premiership / Championship for........................? |

As a "local" I've got to defend Twickers. The henrys and henriettas are much reduced in numbers these days. I won't argue with the soulless description but good times can be had there! Last year we enjoyed the Ireland match with a friend's Irish brother - he produced some great banter which enlivened an otherwise dull match.
Another match a few years ago was enlivened by meeting some Wharfedale supporters - again great banter, marginally easietr to translate than the Irish!
That said, I suspect we're all happiest in our own ground with our own friends around us. What marks rugby out , though, is an ability to respect and applaud the opposition when they do well and also to converse, discuss and debate with the opposition supporters. Not a lot of either of those in wendyball!
Daft BBC piece today asking people in Basildon whether they weer supporting Germany or Netheralnds tonight gave a few idiots the opportunity to harp back to the war as a rreason for supporting Netherlands. Pointless exercise and lazy journalism!

At Otley, we put a late run together and stayed up (just), but played some of our most exciting rugby for a few years. This is what National One should be about. The Championship is all about field position (we've been there and done it !), catch and drive and inside centre bosh up the middle for the pack. It's a war of attrition.
I think that National One gives teams the chance to play a more 15 man game and develop players. A young winger is not going to progress by chasing touch finders and getting the ball twice a game.
Get the Championship to encourage and develop young players and play a more expansive game, so they can show their potential for the Premiership.
