And it seems Pirates are now accepting 2 players on DR with Exe. Honest question - how many clubs in the Championship are now using DR players? I'm aware of B&S(Nothampton), Bedford(SAfracens?), Doncaster(Leeds), Esher(Hairyqueens), Moseley(Gloucs), Nottingham (Leics), Pirates(Exe), and Bris are apparently talking to Bath (which must be a first.)
 
Is the growing use of DR players a sign that the system is working or conversely that the Academy system is a failure and these players would be better off with clubs who might actually give them proper game time in a highly competative league? (Although the Championship isn't really a league, it's a cranberryisation of a league and cup, chimera love child of two disparate forms of competition, mutter, mutter, goes looking off to sit in corner and remember the good old days)

It's ironic that one of those D/R players from Exeter is a local lad who came up through the Pirates juniors and colts ranks but because he attends Truro College Exeter Chiefs have first call on him. With the forwards we have I can't see him getting much game time unless we have injury problems.
 
Personally I don't like the system because the Aviva Premiership clubs just hoover up all the promising youngsters and then farm them out. All clubs in our league who use these D/R players are just playing into their hands and soon Championship clubs' identities will be swallowed up and we will be feeder clubs for the big boys.

Do you think Tom would have been offered anything by Pirates if he was not tied to to the Chiefs ? I personally think it unlikely.

What choice do Chapionship (and below) clubs have to get access to these talented young players? Esecially given the situation you highlight when you've developed them in the first place
 
There's no need to allow a club's identity to be lost. We've been using DR players from Gloucs for 3 seasons now and as the club get's back on its feet the numbers involved have been reducing. This season we have 3 DRs in the squad compared to 6 former Moseley Colts.

I doubt that in all honesty. Luke has no Nat. League experience that I know of and a club like Pirates aiming for the top end of the Championship cannot afford to be carrying passengers.

I think Pirates supporters overestimate the advantage to Chiefs of having the Academy. Teams competing at the top end of the Championship are unlikely to promote Academy players to the first team. The coaches are way too cautious and have the budgets to get more experienced players.

My own son turned down a Senior Academy place at Chiefs to go to a ND1 side. The reasoning was in part financial but mainly because he wanted to play at the highest level available with a club that wanted him. If he had stayed at Chiefs the chances are he would have been dual registered with someone, as it turns out that would probably have been Launceston but at the time of making the decision we didn't know (and still don't for sure), it could well have been Exmouth or Newton Abbot. No disrespect to those clubs. The point is if the Pirates were really interested in any of these lads then they have a pretty good chance of getting them.

I think that Capt Sparrow makes a very valid point about D/R ing risking losing a club its identity.  When the RFU originally talked about making a 12 club Championship into a feeder league for the 12 Prem clubs I and many others said that we would walk away and watch Devon 1 if Exeter became Bath 2nds with its selection and playing policy being dictated by the Prem "parent" club. 
 
Yet Rob Baxter, when asked about us D/ring out players, said that he would only do it if it benefited Exe (rather than the other club) and that we would only do it if the receiving club agreed to provide the development opportunities that we wanted for the player.  I can therefore only assume that, if these criteria were adhered to, Pirates agreed to them, though obviously I have no idea whether this is the case or whether a more equable arrangement has been reached.
 
Incidentally for those who thought that Exe were going to joing the ring fencing brigade Tony Rowe went on record this week as supporting promotion and relegation.  Whether he will think the same way if we're twelfth next March remains to be seen!!
