wireless, noticed you've flicked from your fishes to the green machine with some ease - may be somewhat premature if they don't put your boy in the starting squad in favour of a leeds academy chap?
This full time, part time debate could get comical. Not even the GP boys work 40 hour weeks - these rugby players don't know what work is!

I have no pretentions about it, I've said on a number of occasions that I'll support whatever team he plays for; I'd be happy if he made it into the 2nds. He's currently attending pre-season and will be there four years so anything could happen, and either side wears the same badge, unless someone here knows different. From what I hear, any 'leeds academy chap' would have to be good to get in the 2nds. |

Cheshire Exile, where has anyone said the Esher squad is semi-pro? We have a similar structure to last season, some full-time pro and the larger part part-time pro.

Personally IMHO i dont think there would be any need or reason for any club to use the dual training arrangements to deceive anything or anyone, be it salary caps or part/full time issues.
May be in a very exceptionally rare case, but on the whole dont think so, its happened for years.
From my own experiences be they now somewhat outdated, the reason for training at a larger club was,
A, Position specific coaching. the smaller club i was at, had no coaching knowledge of 9 or 10.
B, To compare against what were on paper better players, big confidence boost if you can live with them.
C, Equipment, approve of it or not a fully equipped gym is useful. most clubs havnt got and probably cant afford to equip a gym, most at other clubs are under used, that area was a draw.
But the attraction was the level of coaching.
All this before full/part time was an issue, certainly wasnt financial either.
My point is it happened then when none of this was really an issue, so why not now!!

I Suppose in todays proffesional enviroment, you would also need your pro contract players training regularly, must be a big advantage to Esher to have pro contract players training and conditioning elsewhere as pro players should.
Would imagine pro contract players at clubs made up of significant numbers of semi pro / amateur players, must find it hard to train as a fully pro is used to and would imagine you would want those players monitered to some degree. (paying a player x amount to do what he wants during the day) my employer hat tells me, i would rather he is in a proffesional structure and monitered.
I would say Esher's geographical situation means they can take full advantage of these arrangements better than many clubs, if works good for them!!! Edited by former9 - 16 Jul 2010 at 18:50 |

Mr Billesley Nomad
Think of it as a conversation in a pub (or bar in my case), where the conversation morphs from subject to subject.
Otherwise these musings would be very boring (see Moseley Unoffy site!)

Cratch - as you don't strike me as a stones in a glasshouse sort I assume you don't read the "Beehive" forum?
Even in a pub it's still nice if the question gets answered. Also pubs tend not to have seperate tables for each topic of conversation (unless you drink in some very unusual establishments) as per the thread system that operates (or doesn't) here. Edited by BillesleyNomad - 16 Jul 2010 at 17:16 |

Taken from the Titans Forum:
Glad to see the lads are being worked hard, when they do the full 8 man scrums they are well over 100 in a row now! They did 60 at their first training session... still have a little way to go to get to the 140-160 Andre would do with the lads when he was last in-charge. Looks like our pack is well on it's way, was it 19 penalty tries we got when Andre was last in charge?

Its alright doing massive totals in training (8 man packs), but as they say there is nothing quite like the real thing

Also has to be said, I'm not sure aiming for a record P try count is a great ambition, and more to the point does anyone remember the first test againt the Wallabies a few weeks back?

all other things being equal, i;d rather have a good as opposed to bad scrum, i guess the question is does focussing on it too much detract from other areas of play or make you rely too much on it.

Champion - agreed; thankfully a good scrummage is something we've enjoyed for a few seasons now at Billesley, in no small part due to the abilities of Mssrs Sigley and Williams.
RTID, again agreed. I suppose having got together a relativelt new pack it's important to get them functioning as a unit but as you've noted yourself I hope you don't become over reliant on it

I think our guys are doing 3 rugby sessions per week plus various gym/S&C sessions over the course of the week as well.

Lee Starling's an excellent player. I can only guess that he has some personal trait which upsets coaches, because the supporters and Welsh (and, AFAIK, Esher) can't speak highly enough of him.

Eel, Lee Starling was unlucky with injuries last season and never really came tio terms with the step up in level. He will be good for you at your level, provided he can stay fit.
Neil Hallett was the Club's top points scorer until Sam Ulph took over last year. Strangely neil didn't seem to put in the kicking practice to get his place back. He's a sound 10 or 15 but not Championship level any more. He should dominate in N2S.
Both are around 30 now and looking to ease back on the commitment, I expect.

BillesleyNomad - I certainly wouldn't question Andre Bester's coaching. When he was here our scrummage was admired and envied. We will have a decent all round game this season, Bester seems a more open-minded coach and rounded person these days.
I look forward to our teams contests this season, there'll be some serious force when those 2 front rows collide!!

Wales have given wuss permission to speak to under 20's coach Phil Davies and the ex Leeds and Scarlets coach is expected to sign later today. He will take over as Richard Hill's Forwards coach. Bit of an open secret really. |

I'm not asking you to

I'm sure it will have a few seismologists intersested. I'm actually really looking forward to the wider contest between Mose, Roth, Donny and Albion - only 5 points seperated us last season. With a fair few changes all round it will be interesteing to see how we all fare this year.

Thanks for that!
I think Donny are being written off way too easily BN to be honest and won't have the disasterous season many are predicting. I think all clubs can argue their case, should be fun.

I don't think anybody's writing Donny off - being in the mix for places 7-11 will hardly count as a disastrous season, it's almost half the league. We ended up in pool C after winning 10/22 games - the same as the teams finishing 7th and 8th and only 2 less than Nottingham in 4th. Thats the big problem/great strength (delete as apprporiate) of this league; 1/3 of the teams are going to end up fighting to avoid relegation and the contest to avoid that fight can potentially involve half the league

To answer the original question...
Bedford train, as a group, on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The players also have their own fitness programmes to follow.
