There are some bitter folk on this forum.

I find the draught IPA and Ruddles to be very quaffable.

I haven't had a pint of Ruddles in years ! Wish that Hall & Woodhouse would get more into rugby, Tanglefoot was a good beer too !

That's because its from the Phillipines: San Miguel Beer was first produced by La Fabrica de Cerveza de San Miguel, a brewery in Manila that began operations in 1890

Still rubbish.

Greene King will go from strength to strength from this.

I think you’ll be disappointed. Asahi acquired Fullers a few months ago. They’re a different company to GK’s proposed new owners.
I was about to say CKA are a Hong Kong property company, Asahi are Japanese food and beverage company!

My mistake, I read the article completely wrong, it said :

It also marks the second time this year that a time-honoured British brewer has been snapped up by an Asian buyer, after Fuller’s was sold to Japanese drinks giant Asahi for £250m.

IF only that was done pre-1997 then it would have still been British.

Can't stand their IPA, spent three years in Cambridge dodging the stuff. However, a gallon of Abbot was the norm on a Saturday evening. Couldn't do it now, of course.
That's easy for you to say.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned the GK sponsorship of our league. The agreement with GK expires at the end of this season. Hopefully the sponsorship will be renewed.

The fact that it was posted in the Championship thread constitutes a mention, doesn't it?!

Get CAMRA to sponsor it then.

It seems a tad harsh to trash the sponsor when the Championship doesn't appear to have a queue of alternatives willing to put money up to replace them.

To be fair CC I do not believe that clubs get anything from the current deal, I believe the RFU takes that money. And, I never trashed them I said perhaps the new sponsorship deal will bring in some real money into the championship......that could well be GK doing it again but with some of those funds coming to us (the clubs). Apart from which, on the beer front, we have a better deal with Carlsberg Tetley Breweries at Castle Park so we have not stocked GK Lager / Bitter / Ales so I have no issues with it.

Marlow RFC are sponsored by Rebellion Brewery who are just up the road and do a very nice selection - their clubhouse bar is like a craft beer pub (I am guessing as it is just over the railway crossing from a business park that they get some non rugby trade as well)

Rebellion is a great brewery, and fairly easy to find pubs stocking their stuff in Oxfordshire. Mose have had some good ones in from Froth Blowers recently, who are doing interesting things on the Birmingham micro/craft brewery scene. Not a bad time to be a rugby supporter if you go to the right grounds.

On the beer front, I used to sink a few battleships drinking Ruddles in my day. Don't see it in Jersey unfortunately, however, never really liked the GK ales.
On the sponsorship front, I am sure that the sponsorship of the Championship is at the top of the new owners list, but depending on whether they are going to keep the branding or not, it would be an opportunity for them to get their name out and about in the UK, build profile etc. That could possibly mean a bit more money into the game, but as already stated, the RFU are likely to pick up all revenue from the Championship sponsor.

Agree CC hence my previous comment about the new owners marketing strategy , as islander points out the current deal finishes at the end of the season ( as does our agreement with the RFU) on that Potential double whammy I can see a few sleepless nights from now to the end of the season if new deals aren't done

Ruddles became Watneys in 1986 and joined the GK group in 2000 along with Morlands when brewing moved to Bedford.
