Our local newspaper reported that Newbury had signed, amongst others Greg Nicholls from Bristol.  However have also just read on the London Welsh site that they too have signed a Greg Nicholls from Bristol.

So...

  • Either Bristol had 2 Greg Nicholl's playing for them
  • The league have changed the rules and you can now play for 2 clubs alternate weeks
  • Someone has got it a bit wrong
My money is on the last option, but does anybody have more information, like which club have definitely got his signature on a contract?

What about Cup matches?
Could there be a third team in the mix?

They could always let him play for both, on loan to each other,  then deduct the points later. Another Guinness please barman !!

Welsh don't usually announce any squad news until late-July/ early-August - a lot of guys turn-up for pre-season, but many fall by the wayside before the first weekend of September.  Consequently, I'd say we're pretty confident that Greg's going to be with us next season if we've issued a press release to that effect.  The newspaper report was probably based on a rumour - he may have been talking to Newbury, or he may have just played table tennis with Chris Rainbow's next-door-neighbour...

Now I'm confused - Chris Rainbow's next door neighbour doesn't play table tennis - Wonderbison does though -

So could it have been Wonderbison who has signed for Newbury?

My information is the player has definitely signed for Newbury, but in this wonderful world of agents and contracts, maybe that wasn't worth the paper it was written on?

The Newbury Weekly News does usually get these things right........

The only thing that is certain is that someone is going to be left with egg on their face!!

Until a wage is paid or a game played a contract means absolutely nothing.

I assumed the signing & departures section was to announce any signings & departures. Am I to understand that discussion over any issues relating to players who have recently signed have to be conducted under this section?

The local Newbury paper has reported that after approaching Newbury and agreeing to sign for the club Greg was made an exceptional offer by London Welsh, which Newbury were neither prepared to match nor compete.

So, as Greg had not signed for Newbury I feel happy reporting the matter here.

Hmmmm...... I was afraid that this would be the outcome.  A bit worrying when immediate rivals are able to outbid us like that

Couldn't agree with you more Rokin. Absolutely pedantic by "Administrator". I like the New Signings thread because it tends to be snappy lists of hellos and goodbyes - not a place for detailed discussion.
This is an issue of two clubs announcing the same player and, quite importantly, when is a player contracted to a club.

Trying to pigeon hole every discussion will eventually kill it!

At least your clubs are anouncing signings, All we get on our website is "we'll tell you when we have finished contractual negotiations"

Its only when we see other clubs postings, we know when a player has gone

Strange about Mr Nicholls.  Looking at his Bristol profile he seems not to have made the grade there, so he asks Newbury (who, as I remember, have ample cover in the #9 shirt) to take him on.  They agree, then he goes looking for something better.  Ok, he's entitled, but an odd way to carry on.  For sure it seems Newbury thought they had a done deal.  Maybe Mr N was merely securing his future while he cast about.  Maybe Welsh will find he isn't going there, either.

We don't know the details so can't really comment on how things went.

When he was told by Bristol, or told Bristol that he wasn't going to be there next season then no doubt his agent probably started to approach clubs, probably more than 1 club.  perhaps it just took longer for london Welsh to come back with their offer.  Also Welsh's other Bristol signing might have put in a word (Martin-Redmond, who the LW coach has worked with before).

I have had it before where I have accepted a job when offered and then a company I'd also had an interview with offered my a better package, so I took that one.  Until he has been registered with the RFU, signed a contract he is free to change his mind.

Glad it is all cleared up now though.  Think the Newbury Weekly News made it out that he had signed the contract and it was a done deal, when in actual fact it sounds like Greg had agreed to the offer but not signed anything.

greg has left bristol to restart his medicine degree at bristol uni. He looked at newbury and was going to come but LW came in with a significant offer far better than the blues and off he went. I imagine with newbury already having simpson-daniel and smaje he wouldnt have been offered much except an opportunity and so LW and their financial offer led him to them. But, medical degree and all that travel - hard ask. Plus, isnt LW capt the scrum half too?

My understanding is that the london welsh offer was quite significant - someone must be pumping some money in to the set up. Simon Miall is rumoured to be the next to join.

No new investors at LW, just even more generosity from several of the Board members. AFAIK they are looking to recruit more welsh players for this season and also players with professional rugby experience - the squad learnt a great deal from the loan signings last year.

Expect a few of last years squad to turn out in Esher colours.

The captain for the last two season (Allen Chilten) was the scrum half but he was injured for a big chunk of last season. I wouldn't be surprised if he is one of those joining Esher with either Howard Quigley or one of the new recruits taking on the captaincy,
