They should not even be allowed into the national league set up IMHO. Is Teresa May a member on Rolling Maul and reading this comment I wonder?

Congratulations to Hartpury on a fantastic record this season.

Whatever advantages (perceived or otherwise) they have to win 30 out of 30 and only drop 2 bonus points at this level is a record that will be hard to beat.

It will be interesting to see how they go in the championship next season.

There is no doubt that Hartpury fielded a very very good team to win N1 in the manner in which they did.
However, in order to put a team of that quality on to the field for a full season requires a substantial amount of money, I have no problem at all with Hartpury playing dual reg players from premiership clubs we would all like to do that its not an issue.
The main issue in my mind is that the majority of the other clubs in N1 have to generate money from gate receipts, match day bar receipts, sponsorship and general fund raising drives and the majority of clubs struggle to do so.
Hartpury RFC can not generate sufficient funds from its very small supporter base to finance a team to tear the division apart as they have done this year.
To my mind the issue is that several hundred thousand pounds must be put into Hartpury RFC by Hartpury college which is on the face of it taxpayers money.
In this day and age of food banks, austerity etc.etc. the fact that taxpayers money can be used to fund a rugby team is a travesty.
Additionally the fact that an ex Hartpury dignitary is dictating to the clubs below level two how much they should be paying players also beggars belief!!!

Mehtinks this could run and run. Whilst agreeing with subsidy comments in principle, it will be interesting to see what Championship clubs make of it. And what we/they think of Sale FC's subsidy by Sharks (through loan players and training ground share rent - similar to OAs and Sarries??)

End of the day the RFU will steam roller through whatever they want as clubs below Level 1 are not really on their radar ...... but who brings these players to rugby?

Luckily, it will very shortly be off topic for this forum. Maybe the mods could lock the thread.

Few of use really know the finances of our own clubs - let alone others.

Well I too am uncomfortable with Hartpu's but if we go back some years there were plenty of top notch Uni based rugby teams who I have to feel had Uni paid pitches/changing rooms/groundsmen/other overheads and expenses for players from the Uni pot.  ..........and some great players too!!

Re ground grants. I too assume that many a team in the  Championship and N1 have received a grant or loan from statutory authority funds.

Maybe we (sorry, and me) are starting to  get into the political arena debate that we will have sufficient of by this Friday and then again in June!!

That's a very silly
childish comparison!!! It doesn't matter how much DMPRRFC paid for the arena. What matters is that they paid for it with THEIR OWN MONEY, there was not one penny of RFU or Taxpayers money spent on the purchase and they certainly don't have an unlimited tax payer subsidised playing and running budget.

Perfectly relevant - if they didn't pay the full value then they have been subsidised by the previous owner.

While I don't have a dog in this fight that's a new and unusual definition of a bankruptcy fire sale! Hardly a subsidy - stroke of luck I'd give you....

At the time, Darlington Mowden Park arguably paid above market value for the Northern Echo Arena, using approximately a third of the money they received for the sale of their former ground to a house-building company. It was (as far as I know) a private transaction without any government or RFU subsidy.

At the time, the Arena had little or no value in the open market - it could only be used for sport or associated activities and there were no other prospective buyers, making the actual 'value' very low, if only as the scrap value of the building materials. It was, at the time, owned by Philip Scott and Graham Sizer who had made a £1.7 million loan to Darlington FC against which the Arena was used as collateral. The loan was defaulted so Scott and Sizer became owners of a stadium they didn't really want. They just wanted the value of the loan repaid, something which DMP were able to do.

As the Arena was standing empty and wasn't being used, something which has been rectified with Mowden games, from Sharks to schools, and various RFU events, from Premiership Sevens to England Women, England Counties, England Under-20s and Newcastle Falcons preseason games. It has turned out well for rugby at national and regional level.

This is a very thorough article outlining the background to the sale:

There are rumours circulating in the North East that it is again up for sale to quote one football source.
On a totally different thread a certain club in Nat One had a deputation from there players regarding non-payment and threatening not to play on the last day of the seasonShocked

I think the club was Old Hallucinations RFC, and the players involved were Jack Daniels, Jim Bean, Capt. Morgan, Advocatt, Greenalls, plus Whyte and Mackay.LOLLOLLOL

Difficult to play against them as there always seems to be so many of them!
