Hi Tony will send a Private message tomorrow on this. Bit late tonight.

Is there any correlation between the unavailabilities, in installation of the 4G pitch, and the corresponding attentions of the RFU?

An old friend involved with an Essex club that has recently had an artificial pitch put in said that the RFUs attentions to club finances when securing funding, grants, etc. can often put paid to some of the "incentives" that keep better players at the club, leading to unavailability, weaker selections, and so on.

The case at Hooks Lane?

As I said our missing players are due solely to injuries, unavailability and a few away with the Navy..nothing to do with the pitch or the rfu

Question is who is going down this season..

Perm Any 2 from 9 at the moment

I don't see Chi or Hav going down so that makes it very interesting for me.

Great question Gareth. I have seen all the bottom half teams and a few from the top so far this season. The worst teams I have seen so far are Cornish, Hove and Thurrock. They have to be my pick for the drop. But who knows, Havant need a win soon to kick start their season.

My money is on Hove for sure, but then it really is a lottery.

The league is considerably stronger this year, with neither of the other 2 promoted sides candidates for the drop.

If Havant do lose seven or eight of the nine away games then they could easily get sucked into the relegation battle - especially if heads go down, even with lots of home games to come.

Thurrock looked very poor from what I saw against Medway, and will struggle even more when it gets wet and muddy, given how weak their pack is, so they could be candidates for the trapdoor.

Cornish unlikely I think - at least I hope not otherwise we’ll all miss the updates on the hordes or Cornishmen are unavailable for selection!

I actually think the losses to Darts Thurrock & Cornish will come back to haunt Totts..

Hope i'm wrong.

Just adding a new topic as I have picked up on general points raised by posters, that some clubs may, and others may not want, promotion. My question therefore is who does, who doesn't and why.

As ever, there are many more clubs who want aspire for promotion than will achieve their wish!!

I can only speak for my club Chobham, we hope for promotion but as we’re growing organically know that it may not happen immediately.

Rucks and mauls may bust my balls, but whips and chains excite me!!

To move up to Level 5 just with organic growth is probably not doable  in my opinion.

I have however seen  a number of clubs come through the league below & this one  to go on to bigger things.

Guernsey
Jersey
LI
Richmond
Guilford
TW
Wimbledon
Sidcup
Sutts
CS

My guess is none have relied on organic growth alone. I remember when Guernsey actually had players born & bred on  the Island my guess is they are very few and far between now.

It's a very good question and as a fan I would love my club to get promoted to travel to new places and test ourselves at a higher level it's something we have just missed out on for two seasons running and the vast majority down here were pretty gutted not to quite manage it..however as we all know at clubs like Havant and the rest that don't pay players a penny if we did go up that ugly question would raise it's head and that would bring with it the age old problem of where the hell does the money come from

Well said Tony, those that attempt the leap to Level 5 will have a well prepared financial plan to ensure a viable squad at the higher level. The attrition rate on players also has to be a consideration, the injuries in this league are debilitating but there is a step up in the higher league which caused us to lose a number of players permanently to injury. Level six does present a league where non paying clubs can survive and trickle in their development players but still providing a skilful and entertaining competition. Long may it continue.

Best, Vuarnet

On this topic, would suggest that any that say they don't want to get promoted are doing so because they can't.  I can't honestly believe anyone, even the lowliest in the league, would say no to a promotion winning season, even if they knew the next season would be one of absolute thumpings.

Predictions for this week anyone?

Brighton vs Chichester - Brighton win.  The restart after the break doesn't get any easy for Chichester and this isn't the weekend they start their climb out of the bottom three.

Camberley vs Chobham - Camberley win, and by a chunk I'll wager.

Dartfordians vs Thurrock - Dartfordians win.  Dull fixture of the weekend, but Darts pack will steamroller Thurrock.

London Cornish vs Havant - Cornish win.  Havant will eye this as a first win, but Cornish good at home and will be buoyed after their last outing.

Medway vs Hove - Medway win.  Hopefully a feast of scarlet and gold tries to watch from the new clubhouse balcony.

Totts vs Cobham - Totts win.  Home advantage to tell, especially with the rain we've had.

Westcombe Park vs Sevenoaks - WP win.  Much more home advantage than anything, 7oaks will be on an up after turning Brighton over, but Park too much at home.

OastHouse1 I have to disagree. I think for a number of clubs at level 6 the idea of promotion could be disastrous. If promotion to level 5 isn't managed correctly it can ruin good clubs. We have seen it happen so often in the past. Even non-paying clubs will struggle to keep hold of their players if they go up and lose each game by 50+ points. One relegation can often quickly be followed by another. Yes the players might want it but any club going up needs to be really careful.

My predictions this week.

Brighton vs Chichester - Brighton win.

Camberley vs Chobham - Camberley win but closer than many would think.

Dartfordians vs Thurrock - I haven't seen Dartfordians yet but I expect this one to be close. I predict a high scoring game with Dartfordians just coming out on top.

London Cornish vs Havant - Havant are not a bottom 3 club. The Cornish I recently watched are. Havant win.

Medway vs Hove - Medway win.  50+

Totts vs Cobham -Cobham are not a bad side. There backline are tasty. But on the Totts pitch I'm going for a close home win.

Westcombe Park vs Sevenoaks - I have a funny feeling about this one. Rumours of infighting make this a close one to call. With nearly 40 players used you never know which WP team will turn up. Literally!

Just reminded of a warning from the past from those who think pushing for promotion is a road to ruin.

Back when I was still playing, a lonnng time ago, North Walsham would cruise through a season and then lose enough games not to get promoted. Rumour was that going up would ruin them financially. Problem is, where are they now?

If a player doesn't think a club has aspiration, why stay?

(just something to ponder...not aiming brickbats at anyone).

I would say they stay because of the environment you create. Good coaching, decent facilities, good food, tour/social etc . For some people their rugby matches the commitment they can put it. So top half finish and a place they can play sport they love with mates? or is that too much of rose tinted view?
