Top 3 this season in no particular order...

WCP - from all the new signing from above, I assume they will be a tough game for most.
Medway - should be there in the mix if they keep the squad they have throughout.
Havant - always a threat is they have a good start to the season

I'm sure it will be an excited league again, every weekend result counts!

good luck to all

I am sure Havant Tony will agree after our conversation on Saturday, but we think we should blame Westcombe Park for everything, even Brexit! Well done to Havant on Sat - really solid side with few weaknesses and will be a handful for everyone this season. Great to see them bring so much support too and the post match was well attended, even if Tony did pinch my pasty!!

good game over at KCS really nice club and bunch of players, think they struggled with the physicality a bit but will score points and have some real talent.

Not sure what "Tony did pinch my pasty" is a euphemism for. I know he's a beer monster so could be averse to food. Would one of you like to expand ?? 😁

Sorry about the pasty Dickon but I'm from a part of Portsmouth called Paulsgrove where the ability to pinch anything is in the blood !!
They were the best pasties I've ever had so to grab two was a tad greedy but such a good decision😁
Will buy you a beer at the return fixture to make up for it!
We started the game very well and the speed of our play was fantastic to watch, you came back at us in the first period of the second half and things got a bit nervous for me but we managed to weather it and push on with some great attacking rugby and fully deserved the win
For a relatively new squad I thought cornish looked good and their aim of a finish higher than 8th is more than achievable

I have no reason to meet anyone from WP for a discussion about my posts as it would be completely pointless. I believe in grassroots rugby where you clearly do not. You choose a different route to get satisfaction from your Saturdays to me. I merely state the obvious about WP.

Having followed this post for a couple of seasons, can someone explain why paying player at level 6 is such a bad thing? If a club has the infrastructure to do so and it improves the standard of rugby (which I’m sure we all agree this league gets more competitive each year) why is it such a bad thing?!

It appears that "pay to play" thread is one that will not lie down. Valid point in terms of if it improves standards of play then why not, but that ignores the fine margins which many clubs have to control their finances and the potential that if not controlled it would seep further into every level of rugby. What complicates matters further is that few if any club will openly admit to paying players simply as they would lose the support and finances of their local RFU but there are options available for coaching and travel allowances which can enable a player to enjoy some recompense.

The crux of this as I alluded to earlier is that has to be a break point where it is no longer legitimate to pay players and level 6 is currently the league. The tempatation, or indeed contractual obligation to achieve promotion , does have some bearing on behaviours towards paying players but this undermines the intent of this league and creates rancour and discontent as expressed regularly on the forum. Each season the club should confirm with their local RFU that they are not rewarding players, I am not sure of the penalties should they not conform but HMRC would need to be informed in terms of the individuals tax return should they be liable.

I suppose that the danger is that once you embark on such a course of actionof pay to play then the stress it can put on clubs culture and raison d'etre can deflect from the aspirations of the majority of its members. East Grinstead was a recent casualty of a withdrawl of support and subsequently lost a large proportion of its players. Conversely there are clubs whom thrive on an amateur status and attract players and coaches on the merits of such, I am sure that Havant Tony concurs with that and the results of late are plain to see with a huge fan base and a fabulous facility producing players whom are capable and willing to play at higher levels for legitimate reward with Championship sides.

Drivelled on far too long on this so apologies but final thought is that if the player needs to be paid to play then really they should be in level 5 or above as improving journeymen.

Best, Vuarnet

I would like to add that people have little or no understanding what paying players actually means, you have the the cut and dried payment with tax an NI paid at source you also have payments/benefits that the RFU count as payments these are things such as travel expenses, gym membership, payments made by members direct, accommodation jobs etc etc some people are convinced as that as no direct payment is made from clubs that they are in fact fully amateur. This is not true! This of course allows some club members to claim that they are holier than thou. It would appear by being open and honest that we pay means we are in the firing line the fact that this has been our model for a long long time appears lost on some.

As long as everything is done above board then it really shouldn't make a difference to other clubs the fact that it does to individuals says more about them tbh

Week 2...
Cam 5 v 0 Cob, Cam still in my top 3
Horsham 4 v 1 Becks, On last weeks results.
KCS 1 v 4 LC, Not sure about this one.
Thurrock 4 v 1 Medway, Tough one to call both sides very good last season, home side advantage.
WP 5 v 0 Darts, WP looks like they recruited well and a big home win.
BP 5 v 0 HAC, on last weeks results.
Havant 5 v 0 Chi, Havant all the way unless Chi have trained on the plastic pitch (again), think Chi will miss last seasons 10, see he's now starting at 15 over at Worthing, class player.

Warren, There is a point when paying rugby goes too far and if your main sponsor pulls the plug, as so many clubs since Askeans know you don’t have a proper functioning club. Some money can help clubs, but when it goes to the extent that a club is paying £600 per week for 2 wingers to compete at Level 6 it has gone too far. Help your club but not at that level of money. Grassroots is where it begins and the next generation should and will learn that you are not going to get paid to play.
