I thought it was pretty tragic for rugby league that the number one story on the BBC's Rugby League page was about a rugby player signing to play 4th tier rugby union. Nice publicity for Preston though.

He was top quality, his powers obviously have waned in recent seasons and he has only made fitful appearances; having said that I am sure he has enough residual class to cut the mustard at N2N level. I hope he is taking it seriously though.

What does Long actually offer?

Surely this is a backward step as he will prevent someone playing and developing and he isn't exactly a marketing pull.

Large investment for no tangible return

If Fylde's recruitment of Jason Robinson in 2010/11 is anything to go by then (i) Hoppers will get a huge PR and marketing boost - they already have, and (ii) young players will desperately want to train & play with him and not object in any way to his place in the team. If youngsters are good enough they'll come through to the squad, in and around Longy.

You see, unlike Glasshopper, we at the Woodlands have nothing but goodwill towards our neighbours. Well done Hoppers! Wink

Allan,

Surely you realise my jibes at Fylde are only meant tongue in cheek to get a reaction out of you, I quite often attend Fylde matches (paying I might add) and enjoy the banter as I know a lot of people down the there.

I was at the Sedge game and was very impressed with your first half performance, less so with Sedge who were rather pedestrian and lacked imagination.

May well be venturing down on Saturday to see you take on Coventry, be an interesting battle in the back row I think.

Most likely be playing at centre I think as we have now lost the services of Tom Hughes (travelling the world!)  and Graham Holroyd is playing 10 (very well) at the moment. Can't see him playing at 9 as too much too learn around lineouts, the scrum etc.

From what I know he is really committed and is well up for a new challenge, lets just hope he stays fit and boosts a few gates around the league.

Of course Glasshopper! That's why the Wink was there. As a Lytham resident you'll always be welcome at the Woodlands - as long as you don't climb over the pebble wall or get in around the back by the tractor shed! Say hello if you do get to the Cov game. I'm certain that they won't roll over like Sedge did that day.

From what he and the chairman said his main job is with Salford and he fancied a crack at Union. He mentioned 2 of his mates in the press conference who are playing at Hoppers, money wasn't mentioned.
