According to TRP it would seem that Loughbourgh will be fielding a majority Leicester Academy team next year with the new coach Brett Deacon keen to ensure maximum play for academy players at highest possible level. probably exactly what Nigel Melville wanted how long before Loughborough follow Hartpury lead and offer degree courses to prospective players and close links to AP

Odd that, as Louis Deacon was at Jersey with Coventry yesterday...unless there are two LDs?
Tried to download the actual photo, but it wouldn't work - it's in amongst these:

Not got my issue yet, but I presume we are talking about Loughborough Students RFC rather than Loughborough RFC.

Yes Richard,you are correct.
It seems to me that the entire article is given over to the positives for Leicester Tigers with no mention whatsoever of any benefit for LSRFC or indeed rugby playing students at the university.
Odd that, coming from the new Head Coach of Loughborough Students RFC - unless I'm misreading the article

That's exactly how I read it how Students place in Nat 1 is going to assist Leicster Academy and in the long term Leicster

Tigers have always had close links with L'borough students, going back to the Clive Woodward days, Harry Ellis also coached them when he retired.

Since it is likely that allowing up to 10 d/r players will apply only for this season, reverting to 4 next season, it did seem a strangely slanted article. LSRFC has always benefited from the degree courses attracting the best under and post-grad students, far better than Hartpury who relied on their A Level Courses until recently.

The jury will be out until the end of September!

I've watched Brett Deacon in action with leicester's Academy -   Rather unpleasant man I thought, with referee intimidation and shouting loudly high on his priority list.

Yes this year Hartpury are offere ng degree courses to aspiring rugby players with the draw of Champ rugby/Gloucs tie In as a sweetner. They have been told they will not get paid if they make the Saturday side as Students. There are several Blackheath academy students (around 6) going to Hartpury in September.

To clarify, Hartpury have been offering degrees for more than 20 years now, in contrast to A-Levels which have only been offered since approx 8-9 years ago.

In the past 11 years, Hartpury have been the BUCS (university sport) rugby champions six times, including the season recently finished, so I think it's fair to say that Hartpury has a big focus on university rugby and many of the alumni now playing the game at a higher level have come through that system.

I don't think anyone in this discussion gives a flying banana what Hartpury are doing now. Having abused and corrupted the system they are no longer NL1s problem.

In my opinion the majority of academy players would not be as good as the top students. National one and the championship are littered with ex Loughborough students.

Many of the academy players never make it in top flight rugby. There are many exceptions of course.I have known u18s international players who do not make it at National 1 level.

But not that strong in Sports Science. My memory goes back more than 20 years to a time when Loughborough were the top University for sports science and nobody had heard of Hartpury other than for equestrian and agriculture courses. I also know of far more Loughborough graduates playing in National 1 than Hartpury graduates.

I have a feeling that the majority of rugby followers around the National Leagues would prefer all rugby to be played between students mid week.
On the other hand if it was we wouldn't have taken up acre of space on this forum debating it.

Hartpury as Gloucester Academy and Loughbrough with Leicester seems to make the Championship  less appealing
