lots of rumours of big spending by last years teams to compete with the likes of Broadstreet,Sheffield and Lucton coming down.Sandbach(though they are very coy about it) investing heavily and Bridgnorth pulling the stops out to secure Stourbridge jewels in particular.Newport have plenty of ammo as does Lichfield and Burton financed by ex players.Should be interesting who turns out for who.

Good time to be a player in Mids or NW. Can we add Bourneville to the list?
Will be interesting to see the relegated clubs ambitions to try and go back up?

Oh dear, your very first post and an internet troll appears. I suggest that you grow up a little before posting again.

Absolutely Ditch! Apologies also to Running Man, but there's no room for sensationalism here. Tell us about 'Port. Have they recruited? Still got Hendry Vaka?

You are spot on Running Man we are indeed investing heavily at Sandbach - great new gym and fitness centre and additional drainage to the top end of the 1st team pitch - just the way any sensible club should spend their cash. Have a good season all, welcome to all the new teams to the league and we look forward to hosting you all this season, hopefully the M6 will behave itself.

We used to 3 years ago. All to Inland Revenue guidelines and all recorded. I suspect we still do. When I was team manager there were an average of 3 on expenses (All students coming back at weekends). I imagine there'll be that number this season.

We have lost (both Cheshire players) Mike Barlow (centre) to Caldy this year and Cam Crampton (9) to Fylde, but picked up a couple. The MJ production line keeps pushing players up and I expect we'll see a few youngsters on debut this season.

Apologies accepted taniwha, sensationalism was not my motive and you ought not to consider Sandbach some form of target.I merely highlight the development of the game within the League structure and the effectiveness or otherwise of RFU Funding guidelines. Most clubs accept the need for bolstering resources as they come up against bigger and better organised/supported operators and are honest about it. A"Holier than Though"affirmation directed by a few touchline Alikados towards visiting supporters at the minority of clubs is greeted as part of the banter if a little banal.
Perhaps just to clarify are you familiar with the funding arrangements or otherwise of Sandbach's celebrated coaching setup?...again not a targeted comment but other clubs may learn how to survive on limited funds and adapt their budgets accordingly.

As my mate taniwha points out we do still pay expences which are all above board and don’t kick in until 15 miles away so as most of our guys are local very few claim. We manage our income tightly and with 20 arcres to look after this can be challenging. All Income comes from normal routes, subs, bar and gate cash, sponsors both club and player and many social events held at the club. DOR has an approved budget to cover all rugby expenses such as kit, physios, travel and including payment to coaches all within existing rules – and yes we understand RFU guidelines. Don’t hold us up as a shining light as we still learn from talking to other clubs. It’s getting harder each year in this league but we will keep going with the ethos we have always had and will not be changing. If you are coming to Sandbach this season ask for me and we can have a pint and a chat.

Not heavily involved on the player front, t'north, so cannot comment; I would definately hope that Hendy is still with us!

Running Man, I don't know the details but I assume both coaches Webs and Birdie receive remuneration for their time. Neither play for us. We don't pay much. Just a few years ago our total coaching budget was about 70% of the figure allegedly paid to a single player/coach and Number 8 at Old Hales.

There's no doubt our relationship with Sale Sharks helps. A number of professional players who are wanting a career in rugby after retirement would see a benefit in picking up experience, coaching tickets etc by coaching at L5 for a few seasons. Scott Barrow and I presume Rob Webber would likely fall into that category. That's a bit of a win-win for us and the high profile coaches. Andy Bird is slightly different having played at Sandbach since he was 5 until he went to Cardiff Met and played for them. From there Andy went into teaching and did all his coaching tickets. He moved back to Sandbach about two years ago and we were lucky enough to get some share of his coaching time.

I think the key to Sandbach finances is that we accept that we can't match the big money. We accept that we could well fall down the leagues and that's OK. We won't get bent out of shape by pursuing first team success. Being amateur is a challenge but success is NOT measured (for us) by the league position of the 1st XV alone. We measure numbers of kids playing at each age group, number of kids carrying over from one group to another, number of kids we move into colts, number we move from colts to seniors, number of MJ qualified coaches, bar revenues, financial viability, etc. 1XV League position is important but it's just one measure amongst the many that we track.

Sandbach is a country town, no real big industry, no real big sponsors. We have cut our cloth to suit and live within our means. I agree about the 'Holier than thou' comments and I'm sure our chairman who reads this drivel will take that on board. (But bear in mind how difficult it is to keep your mouth shut when being tonked by a player of a different class ;-) ) . We are very proud of our set-up and genuinely feel blessed that we can hold our own at level 5, whilst achieving so many other objectives towards the overall development of our sport.

Finally I ought to state that these are now PERSONAL opinions gained from 30 years of Coaching, Managing and Committee work at the club. I have actually just lapsed my membership at Sandbach and am returning to New Zealand within the month. Silverdale Rugby Club in the North Harbour Union will shortly get the pain of my support and I will be keen to see how they run a club. I will be able to see the Bach results and match videos but strangely won't be able to monitor this forum from NZ. There is some form of IP Region lock on it.

Very good points Taniwa interesting how Bach measure success. Good luck back in NZ. Some clubs seem totally driven by first team. They pay lip service to community club, mini juniors etc, etc but bottom line their money goes on one team. You mention OHs and there are other examples of clubs who have thrown money around and then slumped. The debate goes on in many club houses.
At least it will make for interesting watching for us spectators but you do worry for one or two clubs who dare to dream and are emptying their coffers to pay the usual mercenaries who care nothing for the clubs paying them?
Any news from Derby who I hope to be watching a bit this season?

I think what is very apparent is that this league will be a lot tougher than it was last year. No disrespect to the clubs who have left us from one end or the other but Lucs (especially the way they ended last season on a great run), Broadstreet, Sheffield, Burton will be far more challenging so those that stand still will effectively go backwards - how that challenge is managed will, as always, be up to each individual club to decide
What WOULD be good is if we could get at least one representative from each club to offer comments on this forum
Correct me if I'm wrong but at present we don't have any "subscribers" from
Luctonians
Broadstreet
Sheffield
Lichfield
Bournville
Burton
So if there are any readers of this thread from those clubs please declare yourselves and join in the "banter"
Best wishes to Taniwha - you have made an outstanding contribution to Sandbach rugby and I'm sure they will miss you (as will we on this forum!)
We, at Newport, will certainly miss you calling out to tell everyone who cares to listen how many "thousands" we're paying Vaka πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
Bon voyage and good luck
