I watched Westcliff v Brentwood which was a hard fought but pretty scrappy game. The many unusual refereeing decisions given or not given for both sides didn’t help.
A Westcliff player was red carded after a collision when both players ran in opposite directions to catch a cross field kick. Imo an accident with no foul play involved, but which resulted in injury to a Brentwood player who I hope is now ok. Hopefully it will be clear on the video and can be appealed. General opinion from the mixed supporters around me was that it didn’t even warrant a yellow. The touch judge said ‘I’ve no idea where the referee got that red card from, I think he just panicked’ ! A very good win for us with a changed side and we were very surprised that Guildford beat Wimbledon to take us back to the top. I thought our time at the top had gone and Wimbledon were going to steadily pull clear, but it shows how close most teams are in this league this season. It was great to see our clubhouse so full, with Brentwood bringing a large support. I look forward to the return and hope we can travel in good numbers too. To clarify, I talked to the player sent off at Tring yesterday, and he said that the spectator came on to the pitch, swung a punch but missed. All Ok then?

Popped down to watch T Wells v Tring yesterday. Was a gripping, close game with two very committed teams.
Tring had some dangerous big runners but Wells shut them down effectively. They defended like demons, especially in the last 5 minutes, down to 14 with Tring hammering at the line. Were Tring missing some players? It’s the first time I’ve ever seen them play and to be honest I felt a bit underwhelmed considering their finish last year and the start of this year. They were dominated at the set piece and seemed to lack any real threat outside of their 3 or 4 big ball carriers? One thing I wasn’t overly impressed with was the attitude of several of the Tring players towards the referee. I felt he controlled the game well and penalised both teams as much as each other for similar offences. However, when Tring had a man down with a head injury with Wells in possession, the referee rightly stopped the game to allow treatment. When a Wells player was down with a head knock with Tring in possession, the referee again stopped the game and immediately he was surrounded by Tring players saying such things as “disgraceful” “joke” etc. Certainly not in the spirit of the game. Tring do not seem to be endearing themselves to many what with the incident with Hertford last week and now another negative post. I think that was evident last year. It is disappointing that the “gentlemen’s game” sometimes replicates behaviour in the round ball game and Tring, Guildford and Sidcup appear to be getting some bad rap. It is good that some clubs in the league continue to get praise from visiting supporters and long should it continue. Tally ho!

Plus they don't even seem to write any match reports for themselves.

I was at Westcliff v Brentwood, impressed with Westcliff organisation and strength up front, it closed out the game and got them the bonus point 4 mins from time. I have to say something about the red card. I thought it was a red live and after watching the replay, in my opinion, it's still a red. A crossfield kick is taken cleanly by our winger on the run and the Westcliff winger gets there a split second late.
A lot of people will say it was a fair contest but as soon as the Westcliff player loses the race to the ball he has a duty of care to reduce injury. He leaves his arm in on the man at throat level, probably still going for the ball, he pivots round on that arm and smashes into the ground, face first. In no way am I saying he did it on purpose, let's be clear about that. |

Tring VS Hertford From a 5ft6" view on the same touch line The melee started by the person red carded, the Melee was pushed through the orange plastic tape over the touch line into the crowd. As mentioned on a previous thread last week the club house side is close to the pitch. No pitch invasions witnessed. Hope this helps Edited by dave2dave - 29 Oct 2018 at 20:59 |

I’ve just watched the Westcliff red card a few times and I still can’t see how red is the right decision. I admit to being no great expert on rugby laws but it seems to me there are two very committed players racing to catch the ball, arriving almost simultaneously. The Brentwood lad does get the ball but I just see it as an accidental collision. I think if both players had gone down injured, the referee probably wouldn’t have got a card out of any colour.
It seems so harsh to me that a lad will miss games because of something accidental. |

On the Westcliff red card, you see this type of incident in every game. Two people going for a 50:50 ball both intent on the ball only. Both arrive simulataneously but one comes away with the ball and both men go to the ground. This was at greater speed than the usual interception type incident because it was from a cross field kick. Players weren’t in the air. Players both had eyes on the ball. Both arrived at the same time. If there was contact high then there is argument that it should have been penalised in some way but in my opinion it was not and as such shouldn’t even be a penalty. Stop the game for safety and restart with a scrum to the team in possession - Brentwood. Thankfully it didn’t affect the result but it could mean someone unavailable for a time.

I don’t have any right to the video as I’m not a club official, just a supporter. I don’t know how red card appeals work, but I’ll be interested to see if the card is appealed and what the outcome is. Edited by Thames Estuary Man - 31 Oct 2018 at 13:31 |

Red cards cannot be "appealed" but the player can either plead not guilty to the offence at the panel hearing and see what the panel decides, or plead not guilty but with mitigating circumstances and the panel could yet find it "not proven". If found guilty then the player/club has 14 days to lodge an appeal with England Rugby aka RFU.
Sounds like the collision was much like the one at the end of the Tring v Hertford game where the H15 suffered a dislocated elbow in a fair aerial challenge from T14.

I’m pleased to see that the Westcliff player red carded against Brentwood successfully pleaded not guilty at his hearing so was available to play again this weekend. In my opinion, that was the correct decision.
It was good that having to play with 14 for a lot of the second half didn’t change the result, as that would have been disappointing. Edited by Thames Estuary Man - 06 Nov 2018 at 00:31 |
