Following various web site and forum comments last week :

All on this Forum should be aware that the following has been sent by the RFU South West Group Referee Team Leader to all National 3 SW clubs today.

REFEREE ABUSE

It has come to our notice that there is a totally unacceptable and increasing trend using social media sites (eg Facebook) to post derogatory and abusive comments about referees. A recent posting by a player involved in a L5 game was a disgrace and simply will not be tolerated.

The RFU Discipline department have been consulted and have confirmed that this type of comment could lead to a charge 5.12 – bringing the game into disrepute to individual/club members who continue to post derogatory comments.

Please convey the seriousness of this issue to your members / players and advise that any further such comments will be reported to the appropriate Discipline committee immediately.

I think you enjoy the game more if you don't know the rules. Anyway, you're on the same wavelength as the referees. Jonathan Davies,

Sorry how can the RFU charge clubs for comments made by their players and supporters on personal accounts, thought we had a right to free speech in this country? If they say something derogatory or libellous we have laws in place to cover. As a rule supporters and players are restrained and accept the game and controlling it is a challenge at every level. Now club official websites are a different matter, when I used to write match reports I was always careful not to even mention refereeing if I could. I don't like abuse of referees, but I do condone nanny statism and disregarding our right to free speech.

some terrible news from yesterday, for those who are not on the official RFU National3 SW email lists or heard from other sources.

Dave Smith of Somerset Referees Society and SW Group was tragically killed in a road traffic accident on his way to watch the referee at yesterday's Worcester Wanderers match.

The tribute on Somerset Referees' Society web site is here

I will miss Dave as a fellow SWG Match Observer, a great all round rugby man, and as a friend.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this awful time.
I think you enjoy the game more if you don't know the rules. Anyway, you're on the same wavelength as the referees. Jonathan Davies,
