As it is getting close to the end of the season, I thought I'd put together the first stab at a diagram showing how National 3 may look next season. It's still looking a little vague at the moment, but the position will become clearer as the weeks progress.

As previously, those clubs definitely in National 3 have a deep coloured background, those possibly at our level have a pale coloured background, and the clubs definitely leaving us have a white background.

I haven't specifically included the fallout from the London Welsh situation, but I don't think it would change the diagram just yet - again, the position will become clearer in due course.

If I've made any mistakes, just let me know and I'll make the corrections.

Nobody in N3M from Sandbach in 3rd bottom right up to Bridgnorth in 6th place are mathematically safe yet as only 7 points divides 7 teams with 10 still available. I haven't looked at the fixtures in detail, so it could be that its virtually impossible for some of those to be relegated but I don't think its mathematically certain yet. Happy to be proved wrong!

Redskins,

Everyone in National 3 Midlands is safe with the exception of Syston and Bedford Athletic who are already relegated other than Sandbach who need one point to be mathematically certain of safety. They could only be relegated in the unlikely event that Chichester, Southend, Sutton, Guildford and Dorking (none of whom are playing each other) all climbed to 51 points or more in the London Division.

So the "London Welsh" reprieve spot [best placed side third from bottom in the 4 Level 5 leagues] will almost certainly go to the Midlands in line with the following RFU regulation:

13.2.8 Reduction in Number of Clubs

At Levels 2 to 7 (inclusive), where at the end of the Season, a League finishes

with fewer Clubs than the number set out in Regulation 13.2.4 (due to

merger, liquidation or other reason), then the number of Clubs relegated

from that League shall be reduced accordingly by the number of Clubs

it is missing.

This shall apply as follows:

(a) in the Championship, no Club shall be relegated;

(b) in National League One, one fewer Club shall be relegated for each

Club the League is missing;

(c) at Levels 4 - 7, one fewer Club shall be relegated from each League for

each Club the League is missing;

(d) at Levels 4 and 5, where less club(s) have been relegated from the

higher level in accordance with (b) and/or (c) above, equivalent less

Club(s) shall be relegated from that Level. The Club(s) reprieved

from relegation which would otherwise have occurred under

Regulation 13.2.7 will be determined by the ‘Best Playing Record’ of

all clubs that would normally have been relegated from that Level.

Save that a second club cannot be reprieved from the same league

until all other leagues at the same level have had a team reprieved

from relegation;

(e) at Levels 6 and 7, where fewer club(s) have been relegated from the

higher level in accordance with (b) and/or (c) above equivalent fewer

Club(s) shall be relegated from that Level in that Division for each

Club that that Level in that Division is missing. The Club(s) reprieved

from relegation which would otherwise have occurred under

Regulation 13.2.7 will be determined by the ‘Best Playing Record’ of

all clubs that would normally have been relegated from that Level in

that Division. Save that a second club cannot be reprieved from the

same league until all other leagues at the same level have had a team

reprieved from relegation;

I don't think Otley or maybe even Wharfedale and Luctonians are mathematically safe yet.
But I don't know the criteria. Sheffield Tigers could equal them on points.

You are of course correct, Athman & tulip. I have updated the diagram in the first post accordingly. Hopefully the situation will become a little less complex this weekend.

After today's games, next season's league make-up is a little clearer. It would appear that Sandbach are now definitely safe, although the equivalent "London Welsh reprieve" spot for National 2 is still wide open.

Tonbridge Juddian are promoted as champions of L&SE by virtue of having won to date 2 more games than Wimbledon.

Thank you for your efforts.

I think you can remove Alnwick from the potential promotional candidates into N3N. I think that only Penrith and West Hartlepool can make the play offs from level 6.

Here's the latest situation, now that all N3 league fixtures have been completed. Just the play-offs to be played now, but the major confusion is being caused by the relegation situation in both N2 leagues. It's still not even sure which league will gain the "London Welsh" reprieve place (although N2S is currently in prime position) and this is likely to have an impact on any level transfers for next season.

The situation is more or less decided now, with just the level transfers to resolve.
It looks like two teams to transfer from North to Midlands, presumably Sandbach will want to stay in N3M plus one other. Any ideas who this likely to be?
Also there will be one team to transfer from N3M to N3LSE, and I suspect that Towcestrians are in pole position for this spot.
Any advance on these assumptions?

Congratulations to Birkenhead park on securing promotion, selfishly gutted not to have the derby games next season though.

With 4 teams moving out of N3M (Nuneaton, Sheffield, Syston and Bedford A) and 4 moving into the league (SKiwifruithorpe, Newbold, Newport and Bourneville), is not just a question of whether Sandbach want to stay and if not who comes into the league from N3N in their place, Dagfish?
Life is a game but rugby is serious!

Unfortunately not. N3N will have one too many teams, and N3LSE one too few. I can't see them asking anyone to level transfer directly from N3N to N3LSE.

A Northern team will have to replace Sheffield in National 3 Midlands and Towcestrians will fill the vacant gap in N3LSE as travel distances for them are about 100 miles less than Peterborough Lions.

Level transfer has to be achieved with the minimum number of moves possible. Bromsgrove tried to use this logic last year (once the "we can't afford to pay our players and our travelling costs" had spectacularly blown up in their faces) but still lost the appeal.

Can't see any reason why they shouldn't be.
