Let's not go there otherwise the Waterloo thread will be eclipsed!

As for 7's whatever happened to those teams thrown together on Sundays early/late season?

Anyone remember the Glengarth Sevens at Port ? Andy Irvine, David Watkins, Phil Bennett, Glen Webb , Les Cusworth, David Bishop etc as well as the all conquering men in black from Orrell. Those were the days.

PS/MWJ not sure the RFU will see it as a bit of a "pre-season" fun given the substantial funding upwards of £40K plus for the competition sponsored by Secure Trading who are putting another chunk in to the England 7s Team. Mr. Matthews skippered a side in the Northern Qualifiers at WPL whilst Ilkley were off qualifying in the South East Regional Comp...eh?

It might just be me but this sounds like a gross waste of RFU funding and sponsorship for a "National Comp" and frankly no regulation whatsoever. So a player who played in a Qualifying Comp didn't qualify but guests for the eventual winners 2 weeks later. And the winners didn't play in the regional qualifiers just 7 miles away but instead they went down to Sunbury on Thames.... I'm not deriding Ilkley's win it was a RFU Competition not run on the same lines of the other RFU Comps and cost money that apparently after record profits is so hard to come by that they are making the current Women's World Champions unemployed.

Sorry if it seems I'm going on a bit but I hear and see a lot of "we can't do that any more as the budget is being cut by the RFU" only for them to throw together something that leaks money has no regulation and wastes funding. Other than that, well done South East Regional Runners Up Ilkley on winning the National 7s Title

Well, you're clearly very well-informed PP. Can't fault you on that.
I think Ilkley were invited back as a guest side to Witney this year, having been a guest side last year ; so this is perhaps why they ended up being in the ' wrong ' division.

The RFU move in mysterious ways still, but I'm still happy for the ten nailed-on Ilkley players !

Fair enough, if you keep hold of Jack Maplesden you'll do well. Think I'm suffering from post/pre-season anxiety.

Ilkley qualified by losing to Cov at Olney, not LI. Well done though. Would have been interesting to see how Cov fared had they not withdrawn from the tournament at that point.

Any news on Rossendale yesterday meant to have a friendly with Blackburn, any new players run out? Nothing reported on any website, just wondering did they play and what new names ran out?

28-21 win for 'Dale. It seems as if they were pretty rusty.

That would be awkward as hoppers are the first team to play at Kendal's new ground...

MP, I'm pretty sure that's the sum Kendal received and have since spent on the new club and grounds.

Some interesting returnees seen in the blue and white at Lightfoot Green last night in a feisty pre-season game against Yorkshire side Keighley.
What if the Hokey Kokey really IS what it's all about?
