Being relatively new to this Forum, there seems to be a general lack of coverage of the comings and goings of the season so far What are peoples thoughts on the season so far?

You obviously haven't seen the multitude of 'educated views' on the Waterloo thread. If you're brave enough to venture on there you may possibly lose the will to live!!

Thought it would be good to get other people involved rather than hijack that specific thread. After all there are more than those teams involved.

Looks a wide open league to me with most teams capable of beating each other on their day.

At this stage, Carlisle look to be the team to beat for automatic promotion, but its a case of 'take your pick' for the play-off spot.

Two or three wins - or even a couple of shock defeats - could make such a difference to both the top and bottom of the division and it will be interesting to see how the league stands at Christmas before making any rash predictions.

Now, where's my crystal ball?!!!

Former Burnage player (colts, 1st XV and eventually Vets), long standing member and former President.

I think it would be fair to say that the standard of rugby in this league has improved over the years.
It also seems that the step up to what was National Three looks to have become a little more difficult, where last year's run-away success story have struggled to maintain their form.
Likewise, De La Salle and Anselmians seem to have had trouble adjusting to North One West. Having seen both clubs play, it seems a little odd. In my humble opinion they seem to have the players and neither side gave up, still pushing hard at 80 minutes.

We're up at Penrith this weekend and I'm looking forward to their legendary hospitality.

The standout result in Nat 3 Premier last week was bottom club Vale of Lune beating Joint leaders Billingham.
Every predictor had them down for a 5-0 loss. So maybe they have taken time to bed in and have now found their Mojo.
They were 19-0 up on Sandal the week before. Maybe the step up requires a greater fitness.

Mike bit understated there, you might be 3rd from bottom but if results went your way you could be 5th by the end of Saturday ! Carlisle the team to beat, Dela and Anselms have too much to do to stay up..... Kersal got relegated last season with 8 wins!

Well we went to Carlisle and lost by one point in a 71 point thriller, it's difficult to reconcile that it's same group of lads (although we've lost two props).
We old duffers would be happy with mid-table respectability.

Saints were desperately unlucky on Saturday and fully deserved to win . We  received a red card on 50minutes for a coming together of heads which the ref admits he didn't see and sent the player from the field of play based upon the football player reaction of BPs 10, who was as much to blame  . We played 30 minutes out conceding 2 x penalties (rugby God's not shinning on Saints ) ...

I would expect Birkenhead Park to give Anselmians a tough afternoon. I think Birkenhead Park's strengths are Anselmians' strengths but Park are strengthier!

It's a tight league though, and I would have bet heavily on Birkenhead park to beat Broughton Park if I was a betting man and look how that turned out. Good job I don't bet!

Every week is an exciting fixture from where I'm standing.

Six points separate 2nd & 9th... it's an even league. Carlisle out in front, a good side but they've rode their luck in a couple of games by all accounts & that can easily change. Only takes a decent run of games to put you into contention. I feel it'll go all the way to the last game.

Thought I would have a go at predicting the winners of this weeks matches, my predictions are as follows:

Anselmians v Birkenhead Park, home win, but only just.
De La Salle v Blackburn, away win quite comfortably.
Douglas v Northwich, home win.
Penrith v Burnage again a home win.
Broughton Park v Warrington, away win.
Waterloo v Stockport. Home win, just.
Manchester v Carlisle, away win.

Anyone agree or disagree?

Watched saints v park this afternoon at vauxhalls and it's fair to say they got the bigger crowd out the two fixtures played.
Park deserved the win but I've never seen a side fumble so many scoring opportunities in a game.
Certainly not outclassed but unable to finish when it counted.
Sain't seemed to lack on field direction but enjoyed good spells of possession.

A dismal day in Penrith for Racing Club de Burnage.
Outclassed in every phase of the game, apart from the scrum.

Well done to Penrith who deserved the win and thanks to their alikadoos for their outstanding hospitality

BP has certainly picked up ST - interestingly ( for you maybe?) Broughton Park were only the third rated team from that neck of the woods back in the dark ages behind Broughton and Broughton Rangers. And didn't Manchester play up there in the early days? It must have been a hotbed of rugby.

Interested party because my father came from Salford and lived in Higher Broughton for a spell - he played the round ball game though.

BP looking to escape the drop but in competition with both Manchester and Burnage at the moment.

BM, you are also forgetting Altrincham Kersal who before they moved down sarf (to Alty) were based in Kersal a drop kick away from Lower Broughton.

Spot on PP - of course when those sides were formed in the late 18 early 1900's the major shift involving working men ( and women) participating in sport was focussed on those area with large populations. The "Sarf" Manchester commuter belt of three bedroom semis stretching from Altrincham/Sale through to Stretford was not constructed until the early 30's and later.

For those of an anorak mentality there is probably a story here involving the growth of popular sport and the link to affordable housing for working people?

Phew that's a bit much for a Sunday!

BM/PP

Yes I am very aware of BP/BR/B the holy trinity. That’s a long time ago though. In that square mile or so there were a lot of clubs and Sedge were very much the bottom of the pile. It was always Manchester’s favourite dig when we use play them that they were the only rugby club to actually play in Sedgley Park. Kersal (AK) as it was played in Prestwich and Prestwich played in Middleton.

It’s a funny old game

Good luck to Port and the Bongs

Is there much available regarding the growth of the game in the early days ST? For example where did they all play and where did players come from?

In Yorkshire the records are pretty good but im not sure about Lancashire.

BM

The history of rugby in North Manchester is very interesting indeed. The Old Manchester Race Course was a good source of playing area for the many many teams. The area also hosted the first competitive team game under floodlights when Broughton Rangers played Swinton attracting a crowd of 20000 for a mid week game. This was before the schism when Swinton were one of the top rugby clubs in the north. If your intrested I have some articles on the growth of the game in the area. Just PM me if your interested.

One last little quirk Salford now RLFC also played in Lower Broughton, but they were not originally from Salford but Manchester 😂

Birkenhead Park were good for their win on Saturday , unfortunately Saints are struggling to create much against well marshalled defences . With the game in the balance at 15-9 on 55 mins the exchange ref from London gave a penalty try to Park for what he deemed a Farrell type tackle , basically game over !!

I think a good point to take on board is game goes for 80 min and one of the only way s I know to win is to score more points than the opposition ? Anselmians have not scored a try in 240 min of Rugby I think there may be a part of your problem. The Referee has not cost you game your inability to score points tho may have something to do with it ? The next two games are crucial to your season Warrington Away never easy and Burnage at Home !!! Good luck !

Most people are under the impression that the Wirral is a civilised part of the country and yet we keep having the odd outbreak of uncouth behaviour.

Most of us are interested in how things are going in this league which in turn keeps us coming back to Rolling Maul. Let's try and keep the comments informative rather than insulting in the interests of the game.

Oh I really get under your skin poor Monty !! My Sons all three of them do as they wish I left Anselmians because I felt I had taken them as far as they could go and apart from a minority the majority did not want to go on they were probably happy in there comfort zone. So I decided that was it. My five years at Caldy have been fantastic it’s a very good club and in a small way I hope I have been able to help. The Future of Anselmians is in the balance as I said next two games are crucial !!! And as I also said GOOD LUCK !

I just watch from afar and wonder if this family have done so much for your beloved club why you seem bitter towards them.

I have no real idea about the club or it’s set up but it’s obviously a parochial club with this family and at my last visit to a game in those parts (not your ground) I heard talk of a father and son takeover which I can’t see if that actually happened or not (or really care to be honest).

I wish the club well but it would appear it’s going to need snookers to avoid falling into the doldrums below

Sorry but I'm not sure what you elude to by "this family have done so much for your beloved club"?
Are you referring to Goal Kickers family ?? I simply would ask that his thoughts are kept private as they are negative towards a club he was once a member , and his comments under his different handle Full back -
quote
" It's a shame if Anselmians have finally got some money from a land deal to waste it on a pipe dream because you can rest assured that when the money runs out , so will the players . I am amazed the members have allowed this because it will end in tears , or it may be that the club members are bank rolling this ambitious club policy we will never know . We will all just wait for the next big signing ".

Not helpful and wildly inaccurate !!!

Slight problem...

The thread isn't entitled "Watch two bitter old men bash each other behind thinly veiled online pseudonym's"

If it was, fair enough, we could avoid it and you could shout at people for complaining. But it isn't

Instead you just ruin each and every thread available because neither of you can stand the other having a word.

Why don't the pair of you just pack up your tired garbage into a couple of bin bags and sling your fruitfiltering hooks? Or, preferably, just let it go and join in the discussions like gentlemen? That would be much better, honestly

KPITS/BM, Loo are akin to the Duke of York & his men. When we are up we are scintillating, when we are down we are toothless, & unfortunately like the league position suggests, when we are only halfway up, we'll neither go up nor down.

I am not holding out much hope against Carlisle, but anyone can beat anyone in this league it seems, and I'm confident the lads will give it their all - what more can anyone ask for?

Stockport look almost nailed on for 5pts this weekend - De La will struggle for anymore points I think.
Anselmians will find Warrington a tough place to go, but you never know - Warrington with a couple of blips this season not having it easy
Birkenhead should have enough against Manc, but they ran Carlisle relatively close
Blackburn Penrith is too tough to call for me
Fancy Douglas to keep the pressure on at the top against Burnage
Northwich are beatable, & Broughton are enjoying a great run so that's a tough one too

I feel the Burnage pitch holds a real advantage to the home team and wonder what Mike G thinks ?
We currently train on Chesters new 3G pitch and feel that's a world away from the Burnage surface . What life is left on this pitch are there plans afoot to re lay a new surface or is there plenty of life left in the existing one ?

Not so sure it has a distinct advantage anymore. Most clubs have access to train on 3 or 4G and so we lost the uncertainty element.
We certainly have felt it held an advantage in the past.
In the bitter winters we faced during our time in National 3, we trained on the pitch all winter and felt we derived a fitness advantage.

That said the superb backs turned out regularly by the likes of Billingham and Lymm loved the surface too. We certainly felt it helped us beat Chester and Sale when we were in the same league.
We hosted South Africa during the U20 Rugby World Cup in Manchester and they loved it.

The surface is still in fantastic condition. We've lavished care and attention on it (it hasn't cost any more than keeping a grass pitch in tip-top condition) and despite being 8 or 9 years old has just passed a rigorous and official test.

It's used by a few hundred local children almost every Saturday morning for soccer training. American Football on most Sunday afternoons. Schools use the pitch during the day and adult soccer teams on weekday evenings.
All of these activities obviously have to fit around rugby activities.

I'm told by our treasurer that we have a "war chest" ready to relay the carpet.

It's not just us anymore, Penrith have an RFU funded 4G pitch which is absolutely fabulous - I think the cost was 800K.

I'm not being funny but I think my argument with Goal Kicker is more entertaining than this stagnant thread . I have posted my weekend predictions and opened a debate on 3G surfaces and the potential benefits , where are the North 1 West posters ??

Leaving aside the predictions for which I am grateful I note that you asked Mike GC specific questions about the Burnage pitch which he answered comprehensively in his normal courteous fashion. If you really want to open a debate about such pitches then post it to the whole RM audience as I'm sure many have questions to ask and points to make.

As for your argument with GK I have to confess to being mystified about the subject so tbh I find it pretty turgid. Each to their own as they say but I suspect that most posters on this thread are as mystified as me ?

I'm getting a bit bored of the mud slinging... As far as Artificial pitches are concerned I agrre a seperate page is worth opening if anybody is interested. As the recipients of one of the RFU there are positives and negatives.. As far as we are concerned the former outweigh the latter by a country mile
Any body want to know our experiences we're pleased to share without having a go at anybody

The answer is Ed Hannon from memory 1st XV hooker some 18 yrs ago paid by the club to go into schools and promote Anselmians ??
Why do you ask ?

Good grief.

I would next say fellas in response to your thread, but clearly it is just one sad person talking to himself. Maybe this is the wrong forum to deal with your inner/outer-self issues but help is out there. You state (in one form or another) you are rugby men, but sadly you fall very, very, very short on both counts.

Grow up

I’ve changed my mind BP to win away at Moss Farm, now who is delusional

All the best

EDIT, To limit the use of the word very.

What makes you say it’s one person talking to themselves?

This is a public forum ... Why aren't you all raising N1W topics ? If you discussed interesting & up to date topics no one would give any rise to a conversation between 2 fools ..
sadly you have nothing to talk about and when we jab each other the forum wakes up .
For Gods sake talk about something pertinent and leave the 2 fools behind !!

First of all this is a ‘National League Forum’, (yes I know) and a few seasons ago rightly or wrongly you would not see the Loo thread as you see now and NW1 forget it. You have raised this point and the level status as a subject matter, give it time. BTW look at the levels above on the forums not earth shattering as a discussion is it.

All the best

Monty, you can use any platform to "chat" with GK, facebook, snapchat, text, phone.... it doesn't have to be on here, nobody gives a flying kite about your issues. I'm also sure the good people at caldy don't want to be dragged into this tiresome nonsense.
