Off topic - Does anyone else think the league could soon become the full time model that the RFU want it to become?.

Richmond or Hartpury to go this year.
Bedford Training 3/4 days a week.

A huge change from last seasons view of part time rugby being seen as the next step for the league.

We only have one loan player at Coventry - OK, yes, Voss from Tigers, and he has been on a season long loan. Sadly he has spent much of the season injured, playing only seven league matches, and none in the cup. Reports are that he is virtually back to fitness.  As to hookers, with Tolmie, Nielsen, and Dawidiuk, with Will Priestley backing them up from the development squad, we don't really need any more at present.

There are reports that Phil Nielsen may be retiring at the end of th season. There was a lovely Twitter posting from his wife recently about the Coventry family. and if it is confirmed Phil and his family will very much be missed.

and he came up through Ealing as well. Good homegriwn talent for a team that often struggles on that front. For a 21 year old hooker to have his experience at this level is massively impressive.

Bedford announce re-signings of props Sean McCarthy and Alex Penny, full back Rich Lane and the league’s top try scorer Ryan Hutler.

4 cracking re-signings for the the Blues. I was sure 2 of those would be plucked by Prem teams and possibly a 3rd.

And that, at least, is the silver lining to the cloud. I know we all want our players to progress and get the opportunity to play top flight, but sometimes just a little part of me prays that the vultures don't swoop in on one of our players.

Talking of Booj, has he played much in the league fixtures this season?

He was a regular in the league in the early part of the season after Gopperth’s injury. Was playing well by all accounts and was one of the better players in a struggling Wasps team. Won at least 1 MOM award. They changed the team around after a run of poor results and he was one of the players to take the chop. Hasn’t featured in a while, not sure if he’s injured or just out of favour.

When you say 'no smoke without fire' Tf, not sure what that really means. If this new, anonymous and unproven source flies enough kites based on gossip, agents' mischief and a range of other sources (with different levels of reliability), then inevitably some of the speculation will become fact. But this scatterfire approach is also likely to include plenty of claims that turn out, to quote our old chum the fruit filter, to be utter "snakefruits" - sometimes the smoke will originate from an actual fire, sometimes not.

The signings and departures threads always used to be for done deals, not rumours, and I hope people may stop and think before passing on info when they have no idea of its source/provenance/accuracy... maybe there should be a separate thread for rumours.

Posted By: Trailfinder
Date Posted: 21 Feb 2019 at 13:04
Probably wasn't the best analogy. Agree that rumours can be spread without basis, I guess the credibility of the Twitter account in question will depend on how accurate these rumours are.

The Championship needs all the exposure it can get so maybe this will put some focus on it for a change. It certainly seems like there has been an increase in the number of Championship players being signed by Prem clubs in recent times. In the never ending debate about ringfencing, this pathway seems to get overlooked so the more awareness (admittedly in this case gossip) the better. Will keep any unconfirmed rumours off this thread in future.

This is good news. I know that it is early days and a lot can happen between now and the new season, but this is the most settled that we have been in a few years IMHO. Let's hope that some of the names that are missing also put pen to paper (assuming that the paper is on offer of course).
Hopefully, this will mean that introductions are not required on the bus to the first game of the season

Heard rumours cov have signed Rory Jennings from Scottish next season, which is all good what does that mean for the developement players at cov such as Daniel Lewis who’s been playing well and even the boys who are on loan to other clubs, such as the big winger on loan to Cambridge he hasn’t had a look in so far and if cov don’t sign them I’m sure they will look elsewhere

I’ve heard that rumour too. I doubt that Rory Jennings (should he come) will have at 10 any impact on winger Kwaku Asiedu (who has been having an excellent season).

It’s life.

Not everyone who plays for a development squad will get selected for a main squad. Some won’t be good enough. Some will put their career outside rugby ahead of the training needs of a Championship team. What they will have though is the massive advantage of being known by the main team coaching staff, and either gain by being made an offer on that basis, or equally by not being made an offer and avoiding failing at the wrong club for them.

Dan Lewis has looked excellent at full back as well and may be another Tony Fenner - able to play at several positions.  We do IMHO need some experienced back up at fly half...

Posted By: Kimbo
Date Posted: 25 Feb 2019 at 16:55
I'm pretty sure Asiedu is being nurtured for a Cov career.
Irrelevant to the out-half situation though, as already mentioned.
As Rob says, Lewis looks comfortable anywhere he plays, and is another I doubt will be going anywhere.
The Cov Dev system is definitely starting to bear fruit, with the above, Jeannot, Roach, and several others looking the part.
I can see Ben Palmer moving on though, as his main
career doesn't fit well with rugby at this level. Someone will benefit greatly.

...and Pat Howard has been re-signed for a year by Ealing. I did hear from one of the players at the weekend that this year there is an expectation that the vast majority of players will be re-signed, with just a few (hopefully) big name signings and some backfill. Pat Howard looked brilliant early on in the season, but he took a knock and lately seems to have fallen out of favour.

Good point ! but makes this thread virtually pointless in effect !.

Disagree the point of the thread is to advise the current state of play not predict what might happen in the future.

I am not aware of players who have signed and then moved on at Ealing.

Does this happen at Bedford and other clubs. I assume players recieve better offers, either upwards to the Premiership or more money elsewhere.

It's pretty hard to stand in the way of a player who gets an offer to play at the highest level of the domestic game. Not only because of the 'status uplift' but also because of the salary hike that inevitably comes with it. If you refuse him permission to speak to a suitor club then he's likely to be disaffected and it could affect his contribution and risk turning him into a 'bad apple'...

So yes, it does happen, and is the way of the world, but at least if a player is under contract, the old employer receives some compensation.

Sam Tuitupou and Phil Nilsen announce their retirement from the end of this season. Both already anticipated.
Both have done a great job for Cov over the last two seasons, and will be missed.

Jordan Burns, scrum half re-signs with Ealing. Incredible speed, box kicking needs a bit of work, but a very good signing.

Blues have lost 2 huge 2nd choice props now as they are looking to get more all round players like our 1st choice props.
