So, I know that the Premiership starts late this year due to the World Cup. Does anyone know if that also applies to the Championship and below? I have to admit that I think that the better weather for the shifted season would be nice.

Not sure the Cup will start as early as that RB, or if it is in Aug only on the last 2 days (30th and 31st being Fri and Sat). We've been promised the structured season soon!

I have heard from one of the players that the Championship season is due to start mid September.
Anyway, this season isn’t over yet, just the small matter of playing Guernsey tomorrow for the Siam Cup. Honestly, I won’t sleep tonight!!

I think it's the other way round, RB. Nat 1 to start on 31st August, Championship to start on 7th September, with the cup competition.

Tantamount to extending pre-season into Sept then.
I just wish someone would take the Chamionship Cup 'competition' out back and shoot it.

As an Ealing supporter, I've recently come to the conclusion that the Championship Cup is the finest Rugby Union competition in the land, and disagree vociferously with your assertion that it is utterly pointless and bizarre to play the exact same teams in a cup.

How many clubs do you want to bankrupt by reducing the homes season by 3+ matches?

Even better, why not merge it with the Premiership Cup?

Interesting idea, especially if it was played during the 6 nations.

Cannot see the Premiership going for it though - they might lose to Championship sides thus destroying their 'no-one is good enough to join us' attitude

There is a very strong hint that the season will start on 7th September in a recent disciplinary case, where a player received a three week ban which covered the final week of this season, and the first two weeks of next season, and two of the dates of meaningful matches were 7th & 4th September.

Aside of the fact it will be good for rugby for the Championship players to test themselves against the fringe Premiership players and showcase their abilities. Just goes to show that the money men who really don't care about the rugby are in charge at the RFU.

Ideally just Hartpury.

I think Hartpury will remain solvent long after a lot of others are bankrupt - whether you like it or not.

PRL refused to allow joint Prem and Champ cup competition. Nat 1 season starts Sep 7. Championship strongly rumoured to start with 3 rounds of Champ Cup. Nat 1 and Nat 2 likely to have to play on day of World Cup Final.

22 November 2003, when England won the Rugby World Cup in Sydney, I remember very well that Coventry played Bedford in tier 2.
It all worked well with the differences in time zone, and would be similar this time around. It was a long day, but such a good one.

C'mon Nick. DidI have to add 'and expand the Championship by four teams'?
If that causes badly-supported clubs problems, so be it ;)

I've always suspected this (re a combined Prem and Champ Cup), what is your source?

Personally I think this would be good at boosting the profile of the Championship as it gets national coverage and has a tv deal.

But as PRL have refused this it is not going to happen - the protectionism of that cartel is unbelievable. It would have been an opportunity for their A league players to have a run out, and to spy on potential Championship recruits. I would love to see this competition come to fruition but alas I suspect nevergoing to happen.

yes - very interested in the source. My understanding was that the RFU bigwigs were in Leeds dealing with that.

On bBadly supported clubs

If the Championship were expanded next  season it would likely be from Richmond, Rosslyn Park, Blackheath, Plymouth or Rotherham. All reaonably well supported by National 1 standards, but a bit London centric.

Until last week I would have included OEs - but as they shared a sponsor with England 7s they may not be as competitive - dependig on whether or no they have banked the cheque.

Until 14th June has passed, we will probably not get a formal answer. However t is looking very likely that the first three weeks of September will be the initial Championship Cup group rounds, with he Championship itself starting on the fourth weekend.

The first cup game for Cov is on the 21st...of September.

Or so I've been led to believe.

Some teams - Ealing & Pirates have already started back with Scottish expected back on 11th June. Surely there must be a reason for starting back so soon?. Wouldn't make sense for there to be a 10 week pre-season if the first competitive game was late September.

Cov started back this week, and have already had a couple of days jolly team-bonding up in the lakes.

Thought that was the first proper game, with 'cup' games preceding it?
Just what I'd heard. Maybe wrong. Often am. You're much nearer the club than I am Wink
