Cheshire Cup Quarter-final: Wirral 21-17 Caldy

The advantage law is the best law in rugby, because it lets you ignore all the others for the good of the game.

Cups can be a mixed blessing hopefully you come through them without too many injuries for Wirral Caldy was a good scalp but a few players took knocks and they now have a Nat 1 side to play . Difficult to start a season with several players injured.

Echo the above. We lost to Macc with the last kick of the game 30-31 and sustained a couple of injuries.

Northwich next Saturday in the Plate. Local bragging rights mean that there will be no quarter asked or given.

Let's just hope both sides come through with complete squads for the following week's league kick off.

I still think it's a good way for warm up games and to keep the cup competion going.
Being Irish I tend to give no relevance to warm up games

In this instance I tend to disagree. Cups are no more of a mixed blessing than 'warm-up games' with regard to the possibility of injuries.

In particular with regard to this game:
  • Wirral haven't met one of our nearest neighbours (Caldy) in the league for a while (and may not in the near future) this was an opportunity for Wirral to test themselves against the highest placed side locally;
  • Wirral's 'local' derbies in the league this year are Lymm and Macc - the number of away supporters  at this game is unlikely to be topped by either of those league fixtures (or any others); the consequent revenue would undoubtedly be most welcome (as will any from the game against Sale FC)
  • To add interest, there is recent history with both the respective team coaches having coached the opposition in the recent past, adding to a rivalry that extends from the excellent minis/juniors set-ups that both sides have and that meet regularly
Yes there were a few knocks to players, but (as a mere supporter) I thoroughly enjoyed the day and think it was probably a better prep for the rigours ahead than what is usually a meaningless game against the 2nd string side from higher opposition or a run-out against lower-league sides.
