This Saturday's game on the Island is beautifully set up after impressive wins by both sides over the weekend - level on points and a chance to breathe down Ealing's neck.

Just to underline it is a 2pm kick-off, having been changed a few weeks before Xmas to reflect the visitors' travel plans.

We will also be having the Friday night soirée in the Pavilion 5.30- 7.30 and hope there'll be a good number of supporters from both sides there to get warmed up ahead of match-day.

 This is a game I would love to watch having played both sides very recently. The most interesting is the match up between the right wing of Blues and the left wing Van Dam of the reds.

The Blues winger beat two Ealing defenders with the fastest footwork to set up the Blues try all within the 5 metre channel !. We were positioned on the half way line and he it happened right in front of us . It will be interesting to see who comes out on top between the two wingers.

I was most suprised by the power of the Blues scrummage. I anticipated that we would dominate at the scrum. It turned out that it was very even and occasionally the Blues were awarded scrum penalties. Alex Penny was outstanding and Jacob Fields  ( Hooker ) were very strong in the scrum.

What a great game in the making.

Our scrum certainly benefitted in the 2nd half when we brought on Carrick-Smith, Cooper and McElroy, as we must have brought on an extra 60kg and that is when we started to edge it a little more.

The good news for us is Clare will be back which certainly helps with the scrum.  One thing for certain is I do not expect us to destroy the Jersey scrum like we did early on in the season.

Where we may be struggling is Hooley controlled the game so well.  Sharp showed his flair for the last 5 or so mins but also looks like he had a good Christmas.  I think this game needs Hooley rather than the Barbarians style of Sharp.

Hoping for a tight game with a Blues win... only lost v Irish so far in the top 6.  However, I expect Jersey to win this one.

The other things to mention are that:
  • adult non-member tix are only £16.26 (inc booking fee) if ordered online by 2pm Thursday... after that the same ticket is £19
  • there are spaces still available for lunch in the supporters' pitchside marquee, which is £10 for 2 courses - a choice of hot main + cheese/bics to follow

How is Hooley? He went off with what looked like a nasty knock on Saturday.

I may well be a tad biased, but this is shaping up to be the most intriguing game of the season to date (there will be other’s right up here with this one). I am praying for a Reds win, but I honestly don’t know how it will end up.
The key to this game will be the Blues defense IMHO. I think that the forwards will pretty much cancel each other out throughout the afternoon, we all know that Bedford will score points, we all know that Jersey have a very good defense, Jersey are strong in the maul and now very quick out wide. However, the big unknown for me is Bedford’s ability to defend inside through the channels and out wide.
I can’t wait to find out, please let it be dry and a big crowd for this one, this match up deserves it.

No news on Hooley but he was using crutches after the game... so doesn't look good for Saturday.

Jersey can certainly exploit our defence which at times is lazy on the switch of attack.  If Ealing had come to play with a little more width they would've had a few opportunities winger v prop, although McCarthy is no ordinary prop, he still would've struggled with the space against a decent winger.

Surely not mate! So much to think about ahead of this match - Sadly I will miss the Friday night pre-match due to a family commitment that day in Carlisle but a late flight from Newcastle that night and an early one next morning should get me back for kick off time. I have my best man and 5 of his Bedford mates coming over for this one, one of which is an ex Blues player, sadly having to retire due to injury, so the hostelries and restaurants in the Island will be very well used
