What a cluster huckleberry !

The biggest bonanza they've ever had after a World Cup and they piss it all away and when someone raises the alarm after various grass roots redundancies he quits. Spineless, useless people.

 https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2018/nov/16/rfu-turmoil-chief-executive-steve-brown-resigns-england-rugby-union

Who do they turn to as an interim, Nigel Bloody Melville !

We're doomed.

Something not quite right - but Will Carling is on board now so all will be well down at the grassroots level.

Assuming the info in the Rugby Paper is correct, it suggests a £900,000 overspend by the international setup is the reason for the sudden cuts.
So instead of (what they always claim) the international game bringing in funds to benefit the community game, it appears money is being withheld from the community game and pumped in to the Pro setup.

Cosslett did not mention Brexit but he did say the overall financial outlook was uncertain and the sports rights market was tightening. But he also suggested that the RFU had overpaid when it signed a £200m, eight-year agreement with the professional clubs to compensate them for international call-ups.

“We have to accept we signed some long-term commitments with the professional game which, while strategically important, now appear costly against updated revenue forecasts ... they will reduce our discretionary investment going forward,” wrote Cosslett.

Absolute morons. Cast iron revenue streams, a World Cup to exploit and they piss it all away.

Obviously the mega prices for international tickets are not high enough!

Looking forward to the announcement that they will be going up by a higher than inflation amount for this year's 6 nations games

Its all the players fault now !

One of the genius things they did was to put in the accounts the income for the 2015 Autumn internationals, somehow forgetting that because of the world cup, there weren't any.

So they way I look at this is that the RFU had another vanity project to increase the East Stand Hospitality and spend £81m, compared with the original budget of £54m. They  try and say this is mainly down to new Fire regs post Grenfell.  If you believe them, the fire regs cost a third of the total projectShocked

None of this is done for the benefit of the "average supporter" but for the Corporates. Amazingly when the money gets tighter who are the first people to pull back, the Corporate sponsors and Hospitality package buyers

They then sell the new hospitality facilities and take "an exceptional cash gain of £31.6m from the restructuring. My view would be that they have sold this at a discount to help the financial result look better in the short term

I cannot wait until Mr Barons gets his hands on next years reportWink

Mr Baron doesn't look like he'll get anywhere near Twickenham, what utter idiots the RFU are !

How childish but it does the beg the question how many of these privileged members are there, as it will be on top of the members of the RFU Council who are also on great jollys?

Privilege membership is awarded to a small number of people each year in recognition of outstanding contributions to the game. Privilege benefits include: two complimentary match tickets for Test matches at Twickenham, with the option to purchase four additional match tickets; one complimentary lunch, with the right to purchase an additional lunch; access for two to the members’ lounge, including free drinks; a complimentary dinner ticket, with the option to purchase an additional dinner ticket.

Leaving aside the free lunch, dinners and drinks that is potentially 6 tickets per privilege member that do not make it into the public domain

Maybe these grants should be made public so we can see who the RFU deem worthy of these grants as I bet there is little if any Grassroots recognitionAngry

The real issue is the capitulation of the RFU to the Premiership clubs under the PGA and being forced to pay the majority of the income to 12 clubs whilst the grassroots are left to wither.

The removal of benefits from alickadoos is minimal in comparison.

When the PGA comes up for renewal, the RFU must take steps to ensure the same mistakes aren't made again.

Aside from the irony of an RFU chief expostulating on how not to spend a bucket-load of cash, it has absolutely nothing to do with him?

Chaps, it's pretty clear where the RFU's problems came from:-

the appointment of Ian Ritchie

during his tenure, the RFU's turnover, head count, elite rugby costs & Director's pension payments DOUBLED * while the funding and head count for community rugby declined substantially

having increased overheads dramatically he then buggered off as soon as revenue fell

absolutely exactly the pattern that he left behind him at the All England Tennis club (Wimbledon)

the flawed recruitment process and lack of supervision during his 'reign' are entirely the fault of the then Board & 57 old farts who failed in their fiduciary duties...

* taken from RFU published accounts during Ritchie's role
a Freudian slip is when you say one thing but mean your mother

Remember there was pressure from Government for more modern structures where the executive would be allowed to govern without this messy scrutiny from cumbersome bodies of elected representitives. This applied mainly to FA - but also to RFU. So council powers to scrutinise were curtailed.

Also RFU agreed massively payments to PRL to release players.
And where is Ian Ritchie now?

This must have passed me by.
