It’s rest week so a good time I thought to look back at what predictions we made for top 3 / Bottom 3 and see how we are getting on.

I’m still confident of Barnes and Hertford finishing top 3 but Westcombe Park being weakened this season was obviously a surprise for me.

As for Bottom 3 Towcestrians and Southend are there at the moment but Southend are improving and just got back to back wins which gives them hope of getting out of trouble. Sidcup are doing better than I expected in this league but there is still a long way to go and they could get sucked towards the bottom if they are unlucky with injuries. The same can be said of many teams in this league. It seems that losing two or three key players makes the difference between losing and winning matches at this level, so luck with injuries will play a big part.

TEM, I know Honest goes on about injuries at Barnes and they continue to do well showing their strength. Tows have had a fair few injuries but the team is gradually changing with players returning. From what I can see Southend have recently had some changes which seem to have done them well. I assume reinforcements rather than injuries forcing their hand. Can anyone confirm? Shelford and Dorking change their backs a fair amount. I wonder why?

Westcliffe appear similar not making too many changes up front but their backs change every week. Is that down to injury?

As for my predictions, I can’t remember what I said early on but Guernsey, Barnes and Hertford were definitely my top 3 which looks sound...other than the surprise for me - Tring.

Top 3
To clarify this MC, I have been merely been curious if other teams are in the same boat injury wise as we are..from messages I have had it appears they are...so to be clear, I wasn't grumbling or seeking sympathy, I am just worried about all of our players and their welfare, I personally have never seen it so bad in the last 10 years. Incidentally, we did pick up another long-term injury on Saturday in a very feisty game at WP when one of our centres broke 3 bones in his hand, out for 2 months at least.

If all of the teams are suffering in the same way, then after Christmas I believe it will be the team with the deepest squad that will fare best. What do you all think?

Top 3
Barnes - we will get stronger as the season progresses - 2nd half on Saturday was the best performance this season
Hertford - well drilled, good squad, tough to beat home and away, have lost only to Guernsey and Barnes
Tring  - unbeaten at home, only lost the once to Hertford  - Barnes at their place in a few weeks will be quite special

Bottom 3
Shelford - based on games we have played in this year, unless there is a major change, Shelford will continue to struggle
Westcombe Park  - looking at the results, and again our game against them, they are well up against it, even with more loan players
Towcestrians  - even if a load of players come back from injury they are coming from a long way back, not saying it is impossible but it is a very tough ask  - have not played them yet so will probably have to eat massive humble pie Ouch

Honest, sorry, I wasn’t intimating that you were grumbling. Just that you were the one I remember raising the subject. Player welfare should be number 1 at all clubs and good to see that you consider it so prominently.

I don't see the top 4 being much different to how it is now at the end of the season.  There's only 3 points in it after 10 matches.

If I had to put them in order I'm going with
1. Barnes
2. Guernsey
3. Hertford

With Tring tucked in just behind... but honestly it could be any combination of those four.

At the other end...

12. Sidcup
13. Westcombe Park
14. Towcestrians

Sidcup had 4 wins on the trot at the start of the season, but have only beaten Towcestrians since then.  Unless they can turn their season around quickly I think they'll be scrabbling to stay out of it come the end of the season.

Of course their next home match is Tunbridge Wells, who have struggled over the last couple of weeks.  That's going to be an incredibly important match for both teams.  After that fixture Wells face four of the top five sides in a row, with only Guildford breaking it up (and of course they've proved themselves pretty handy at times this season as well).  Wells have proved able to run the top sides close, but they need to start winning those tough matches otherwise they'll find themselves in among the relegation spots by the time they travel to Towcestrians on the 20th January.  That said, however the next 6 matches go, there are enough points left in the home stretch of the season for Wells to dig themselves out of any trouble they may find themselves in.

I think Southend and Shelford have both got 3 or 4 wins in them before the season is done, and along with bonus points, will do just enough to survive.

At Westcliff, the backs have had to be shuffled around a lot this season because of injuries. It’s frustrating for me as a supporter because with our best 15 on the field I feel we are as good as anyone in this league at almost all areas of the game (a couple of things definitely need work) but I imagine there are other clubs who feel exactly the same. Rugby is certainly a squad game and I agree that in the second half of the season depth of squad could be the deciding factor. A couple of Key injuries could mean a club suddenly having a change of fortune and not being able to buy a win, so until those ten wins are on the board Imho nobody is guaranteed to be back in this league next season and that gives hope for those currently in the bottom three.

I thought it was time to resurrect this thread again!

I'd like to say it's all becoming a but clearer... but it really isn't!

I don't think anyone's going to prise Guernsey from top spot now but runner-up could be any one of Barnes, Tring or Hertford.

At the other end I don't see any salvation for Towcestrians or Southend.  That top relegation spot though?  It could still be any one of 5 or 6 teams.

It's only Westcliff, Tunbridge Wells and probably Dorking who just need to keep doing what they're doing without an eye on promotion or relegation.  At this stage of the season with only 7 matches remaining I'm amazed that things aren't more settled.

What a season.  It's going to be an entertaining run-in.
