< ="text/" ="" ="/B1D671CF-E532-4481-99AA-19F420D90332etdefender/huidhui.js?0=0&0=0&0=0">Ealing Trailfinders have 44 players in their squad and obviously there will be players who will play very little rugby this season. I have read on here and spoken to supporters of opposition teams who tell me of the horrific injury list their teams are suffering.

The make up of the Ealing Trailfinders Squad

5 Tightheads
3 Hookers
4 Looseheads
6 Second Row
2 No 6`s
2 No 7`s
2 No 8`s
4 Scrum Halves
3 Fly Halves
3 Right Wings
2 Left Wings
5 Centres
3 Full Backs

44 Players

It seems an excessive amount of players to me ! but it is a fine balance between having quality back up and having redundant rugby players on the sideline. Ealing managed to use all three Fly Halves from last season due to injury it seemed in equal measures.

This thread should be in the main Ch'ship section shouldn't it?(I know squads are used in Cup too, but this page gets less traffic).

FWIW Jersey's 35-man squad for the coming season is 20 forwards and 15 backs. 3 for the most specialist positions (loose/tight/hooker/scrumhalf) and 2 for most others... that's similar to previous seasons, the last two of which have seen some spells where almost everyone fit was in the XXII

A key factor in the final positions will be injuries and strength in depth of the squads. Jersey did far better last season than I had initially expected and I think the main reason was lower than expected injuries and the fact that the "first choice" starting 15 were reasonably well matched by the cover elsewhere in the squad. At various times last season Donny & Pirates lost key players and I think this was probably very significant. The most extreme example last season was probably Yorkies who had a wonderful first choice 15 but there seemed to be a big difference between them and their squad cover. If Irish keep their best squad fit particularly for the big games (they can play their youth team when they visit St Peter) I think they will edge the league but Ealing may have better overall cover within the squad.

You are right I posted incorrectly on the Championship Cup header !. Although the Cup if not taken seriously by all will feature most of the squad players who have little or no game time. Having exceptionally quality reserves in all positions is huge in this league with the inevitable injuries all teams seem to suffer.

I have seen the long list of injured players on a wiper board in the team office. There were 8 injuries at one specific time in varying degrees of seriousness.

Concussion being the main culprit , shoulders ,knees, hamstring, achilles etc.
Ambition should be made of sterner stuff.

Ithink The Blues will be struggling to get up to 30 from what we've seen so far, which is light to say the least!  Hopefully there are still more to come - we only have 1 scrum half for example, can we have Burnsy back from Ealing?Smile

I feel your pain Dunc - Donny seems to be scratching about in the mid to low twenties at the minute.....just hope they are not relying on DR / Academy step ups
Onward and Upwards C'mon Donny!

Coventry's first XV squad is currently listed at 35 (including one who hasn't been announced yet)

19 forwards
6 Props (1 of whom was a hooker previously)
2 Hookers
2 Second row
2 Second row / back row
7 Back row (1 of whom converted from second row late last season)

16 backs
3 Scrum Half
4 Fly half
1 Winger
2 Winger/Centre
2 Centres
2 Winger/Full back
1 Wing/Full back/Centre
1 Full back/Fly half/Centre

Personally, I wouldn't be surprised to see one more prop announced, and the convert from hooker be relisted as both.

Nick, two hookers? Tolmie, Nilsen, Dawidiuk? (Plus Priestley, who may still be listed as Academy; not sure)
So who is the prop/ex-hooker?

Confuddled of Hinckley.

Scratch that. As just advised, Nilsen has been listed as a prop.
Seems odd.

I hope this isn't correct as Cov will inevitably have a shed load of injuries in their first season back. You cannot put a team out every week with only 2 hookers. When one is injured what happens?

There’s at least one up and coming hooker in the development squad who showed he was capable of stepping up on occasion.

Hi CC - there are indeed three hookers in the Cov squad as mentioned above -  Tolmie, Nilsen and Dawidiuk. Will Priestley got some limited game time towards the end of last season, so we should be okay in that department.

Jack Preece is also able to play hooker if necessary, as he did for Moseley in the Championship a couple of seasons back, and indeed was registered as an FRer last season as well, I believe?

Now only ! four tightheads ..........how will we cope ?  Campese Ma`afu joins Leicester .

Down to 43 players in the squad.

Any Ealing fans notice that Andrew Duratalo was missing from the team photo yesterday? I counted 42.
