There were some moments of misgivings at Caldy this season about the way ahead- loss of funding etc and even a sugegstion that the club could not afford a promotion. However, surprise surprise when it came to securing the talents of one Paul Senior for the 2009-10 season they ahve once again  proved  that they punch well above what they claim is their financial weight. He is a good player and a grand chap off the field but £20,000 for the season with RFU cash cut backs and  a recession what sort of playing budget have they managed to muster ?

Who is Paul Senior?

What is his rugby background?

£20k - what will he be doing for this much?

Mighty I have asked on several threads, how concrete is this?

Last I heard, he was on his way to Macc!! It was signed, but not sealed!

Mighty, where has your info come from? I presume you have strong links with the club. Its a big signing if so, and clearly states their title ambitions.

Not answering many questions Mighty, that is a bold claim to make, I for one will not be biting until I see his paycheck. May I ask who your home club is M.P.?

Interesting to compare the Arnold story with the Blackpool Gazette headline featuring Mark Nelson's comments about player recruitment at this level of national rugby: "Wanted: players who'll turn out for a pittance".

Excellent article.

So which clubs in N2N are going to be cutting their cloth accordingly like Fylde, Waterloo

and which are going to going for broke?

Personally, I cant see the Arnold story being true.

It was well publicised on here this season, that Caldy as much as other clubs of the same stature, are feeling the full force of the current economic downturn.

Unless a club has big time backers, like the Halifax of old, or they are going to get something out of the club then it doesnt make economic sense for people to put large wads of cash in. The whole system was not sustainable as it was, and I for one, am glad its going back to the old school ways. Maybe this way, we may see more passion in the badge and better games and a higher quality games.

Well here is for thinking anyway..... Where is Biff when we need him??

i certainly cant see this being true

it puts the management in a bit of a predicament when trying to explain this to the other players if it is

Axeman,

thank you for your invitation to comment. Interesting rumour from Mighty Pen that Paul Arnold is joining Caldy.

Paul Arnold is still very much the right side of thirty and if it is true that he has joined the Wirral club then that really is a marque signing. I have watched him play and he seemed to be a wholehearted and committed player who could lift players around him. He has the size and agression to compensate for the retirement of Paul White and Richard Bradshaw and is a formidable ball carrier as well as strong in the tight. He certainly made an impression on me. All in all a good man to have on your side

If this rumour is true then this is a very good signing by Caldy if the terms are right.

However I cannot believe that any club below the Championship or the Premiership would lay out £20,000 per annum on one player and it would be a real surprise to me if a club of Caldy's size was prepared to entertain this level of expenditure on one player.

Believe me the money is spot on and I understand other Caldy players will be knocking on the rugby chairman's door. However I am sure that paul will be doing some coaching too.

Mighty Pen,

The rumours around the North were that Paul Arnold would either end up at Macclesfield or Sedgely Park and there was some chat that Fylde may possibly be in the frame.

The strength of your assertion that he has gone to Caldy is provoking but what I cannot reconcile is how anyone other than the parties involved would know the terms of the arrangement.

I suspect one of the following:

1. You are winding all of us up
2. Someone is winding you up
3. You are winding up someone at either, Sedgley Park, Macclesfield or Caldy.
4. You are winding Paul Arnold up!

Well, well Mr Mighty Pen you have stirred something up here!

My sources tell me that you are not far from the truth (the bit which is vague is the actual amount but the actual amount of anything of 5 figures is really irrelevant isnt it).

There seems to be a number of people on here mentioning various other NW clubs well why has Mr Arnold chosen Caldy over Sedgley Park, Fylde and any other potential suitors?
