In the last World Cup can anyone remember how clubs who had players in the Cup worked their squad? Were players signed and used for the season (because of the 6Nations as well) or did they then come on to the market in January?

I am curious with the World Cup slightly earlier how clubs will work this time and whether there will be an upsurge in "loan" players this time around

As far as I recall (and the memory may be failing me here!) most clubs hung on to there "world cup cover" players - e.g Lee Best at Bath who'd been signed fromBristol on a short term deal and ended up spending two years at the Rec!

As you say, it may be different this year with the RWC happening a bit earlier and a whole host of southern hemisphere players signing contracts with Premiership teams for after RWC. We shall see!

It may be that the Guinness 'A' League doesn't get started until after the World Cup, as the 'fringe' players will be playing first-team rugby while the stars are away.  IIRC, back in 1999 (in the days before bonus points) teams were awarded two points for a win during the World Cup and three points for a win after, thereby ensuring that the teams who contributed to England weren't disadvantaged in the domestic campaign.

Never a problem at Roth, as I do believe we had no players involved in the World Cup.

Keyter, Cannon, Schmidt, Wilfley spring to my mind.

Keyter was still with us in 2003, Cannon & Wilfley had left and Schmidty had stopped playing by that stage.

Jake Rauluni was in the Fiji squad though I think.

One of the key pillars of our survival bid was that we would take advantage whilst other teams were badly disrupted during the RWC.
We did as well, we only lost by 10 at Leicester just after the RWC final!
