Nip and tuck yesterday for much of the game at Bradwall Road. Burton have definitely beefed up since their last foray into Level 5 and will prove to be a handful for many sides this season.

'bach came through mainly because of an edge in fitness and tempo but will be pondering on the lack of penetration outside the pack, usually a strength.

Thoroughly enjoyable run out b both teams today.  Score unimportant as match was played in great sporting spirit and friendship.  Harrogate just squeezed it, but the main winner was The Wooden Spoon Charity.ClapClap

Already talk of a return match at Newport this time next year.  Bring it on as the travelling supporters from Newport were a great bunch.

Best wishes to Newport for the new season and maybe instead of both being 3rd in our leage we may get promoted to Nat2N.
Big smile

Nuns played last night at Lutterworth RFC. Nuns won 19-0 in 4 x 20mins sessions. Squad players and aspiring youngsters given a chance to shine. Good workout for all. Thanks Lutterworth.

I am pleased to report that Bournville is represented on this forum. I read everything with great interest (although I seldom post). We have quietly strengthened our squad over the summer and numbers at training have been good. We are already using our new AGP. The clubhouse will be handed over to us on 24 August and we open the new facility for business on 15 September for our first home game against Broadstreet. I hope you will all enjoy your visits to Avery Fields and the superb new facilities we have built.

As can  be testified by both Old Hales and Longton last season and a few others no doubt previously.

Not really. We certainly lose players upwards. (As I guess we all do) but there's not much (if any) swapping of players between L5 clubs as we see across the Birmingham central band. I wasn't being critical; it's just a factor of geography and large close centres of population that are able to support large numbers of big clubs all close to one another.

One unwanted side-effect of paying players is a reduction in club loyalty. This must also contribute to the Annual Merry-go-Round effect. I assume something similar goes on around the capital?

Re various responses
Most games local compared to N2N! - apart from Sheffield and Scunny.
Will be interested to see the two Namibian forwards.
No expectations that this season will be easy - but will be playing for promotion.

Good to hear from you club1860, welcome back to Level5 and thanks for the update from Burton
Two main big differences between 5 & 6. Yes the bulk of us like to play good rugby but you will find a big step up in physicality and far better organised defences
If my memory is correct we now only need contributors from Bournville, Sheffield, Lichfield & Syston to make it a full house

News from Burton.

With the exception of a couple of players moving out of the area all the players from last season have been retained which is a relief as I’m sure some players would have been approached by other clubs in the off season.   Ricky Whitehall, now in his third season, will continue in his role as Player Head Coach at the club.  He will again be supported by Tom Barlow as attack and skills coach.

We have a returning player (centre) from Newport who will be a better player for his experience in this league last season, plus managed to attract three players (scrum half, second row & winger) from junior clubs in the area.  Our Mini/Junior section is also bearing fruit with 7/8 players moving up from the Colts but they will take time to adjust to their full season in senior rugby and Level 5 might be a big ask for them.

Pre-season is going well and again we are using St George’s Park for our training base and this will continue during the season when we have use of the indoor 3G pitch on a Thursday evening which helps during the winter months.

A positive from last season was our strength in depth and the form of our 2nd XV who play in Midlands Reserve League Division 1.  They had a good first season in that league and it meant we had competition for places in most positions which is key.  I would say we are optimistic but also understand the challenge ahead.  In recent times we have never managed consecutive seasons at level 5.  But we are trying to play a good brand of rugby and may be at this level where the refereeing will be better and teams also like to play rather than stopping you from playing, this might play to our strengths.  We need injuries and luck to be on our side and a good start always helps, but that’s the same for all teams.

Whatever happens we are going to enjoy it and look forward to welcoming all visiting teams and supporters to Peel Croft for a few pints of Pedigree!

Lucky - you and "Street" will probably be expected to be the front runners and looking for an immediate return but think again if you think this league is going to be a stroll
I think Bees thought the same when they came down but has taken them 3 years to get back to Nat 2 (and they were a Championship side not too long ago)

Looking forward to some real local derbies.
Lost a couple of players, but re-signing likes of Drew Cheshire from Rotherham suggested that Lucs do not intend to hang around too long.
