Topic: Upgrade/Spam/Thanks Posted: 30 Dec 2011 at 13:59 |
A big thank you to Wonderbison for the upgrade yesterday. You may notice some new features but won't have noticed spam! Despite three attempts last night none of the spammers posts got through the new spam filter.

Yes thanks, Wonderbison, and that no doubt goes for everyone who posts or lurks on this board.
Spammers excepted...

Hi
A spammer in China DID get through a small amount to us but I notice that he has hit several sites and one site a lot worse than ours.
Their IP address, in fact the 60. and 58. prefixes both come from China and that whole range has been blocked.
Thanks to Hammer for spotting and notifying.
A new feature you may have seen was Chat, I have disabled that as we are not allowed to have any chat channel at my ISP. I have also made today a few other minor tweaks for the site.
Sadly with spammers, they are quite often humans and that means that they can post just like you and I. But with IP range blocking and a feature I have requested to WebWiz we can maybe reduce it further
So, there will be spam, sadly but with each spam our site can be improved to reduce that type of spam again.
Thanks for your patience

Not only can spammers not get through, I have just spent ten minutes typing an innocuous post with no fruity words only to have it rejected by the spam filter. The text has now disappeared. Any idea what I might have done wrong? It would have been my first post of the day so it's not as if I have been bombarding the board.

That's easy for you to say.

It could be you used a 'key word' that spammers use and which shouldn't have any reason to be used on a rugby board and therefore will be rejected by the spam filter.
If you want to PM me and let me know what you were trying to post, I'll look into it.

Albert If this was you who got in contact with me then we have chatter. If you are a different person, then please drop me a line.
If it was the same person then I have no idea why this happened as it all worked when I tried it and you have indicated that next time you will take a screen shot. That is great if you, or if anyone gets an issue, can.
Spam will increase now that the season of goodwill is over I have no doubt in your email inboxes which means we may see more on the site. Now that I am at home (for the near future at least) I can act on it quicker.
Thanks all

No, I haven't been in touch about this other than my post above. Is it possible to have a list of words which might attract the attention of the spam filter (assuming, of course, that the powers that be have the ability to get around it)?
Richard, if I could remember all of the words I had posted I would gladly forward them to you. Sadly, my memory isn't up to that any more and, as I said, the post just disappeared when rejected by the filter.

None of those, I'm pretty sure. Ah well, I'll perhaps have another go tomorrow. Thanks for the update.

The first and last words will not reject the post but will seek approval by a moderator before it shows up, as I recognise that there could be a rugby related reason to use these words.

The spam filter has stopped me posting on 3 occasions, no rude words in any of my postings.
