Hi
I am going to upgrade the software for rolling-maul some time tonight as I suspect it will be quiet.

The main reason is that there is a new feature where the site checks against http://www.stopforumspam.com/ to try and reduce further the spam. Some will always get through because of the settings we have (if we made it so that no spam got through it would mean all posts would need moderation and thats impracticle) but every little helps.

I am also going to enable Google Analytics for the site. This site generates over my bandwidth usage allowance (and I have a LOT) each month ignoring my other sites and I just want to see what might be causing it. (I suspect its big pictures and then people viewing them multiple times).

Any questions get in touch

Thanks

Robin

AFAIK the viewed / not viewed status of posts is stored in a client side cookie, so if you have read a thread on your computer, it will still appear as unread on your phone.

If your phone is totally refusing  totally to mark posts as read, make sure you're logged in to your account (not sure if this makes a difference or not) and make sure your browser is accepting cookies from this site.

Since the upgrade every time I log in on my I-pad it goes into the mobile rather than the classic mode. Is this as a result of the upgrade?

Could be the ipad caching the site.

  • select settings

  • Safari

  • Clear History

  • Clear Cookies and Data
then try again.

that may sort things out.

Since moving jobs access to the site is not possible so apologies for the delay in replying

RorD is right, "last read" is down to cookies.

Concerning the iPad mobile/classic mode this could be part of the change. There has been some changes in this area and there was a setting that has come about. The following didnt exist, but I dont know what it means.

Is it annoying?

DG, I too am having this problem, but it stops doing it if I log in before I view the site.

Slightly annoying, but I touch the "classic" marker and it converts it to classic view straight away.

Hi WonderBison,
I think I'm having a problem similar to the above, and it's on my PC, rather than my phone. Whenever I view a forum (not logged in) the counts of un-read posts on the threads is always all of the posts on that thread, no matter how many times I've read it. Also the little yellow arrow that used to take me to the first unread one just takes me to the start of the thread, which is obviously part of the same problem. No doubt it's something to do with cookies, but is there anything you can suggest? Some of those threads are tedious enough to read once, let alone every time.Smile

I think you may have answered your own question - if you're not logged in the board can't know what you've seen and what you haven't.
That's easy for you to say.

Albert - yep, I see your point, but that's not the way it used to work. I rarely log in as I seldom have anything worth saying (just check my posts and you can verify this for yourself!), but the 'take to last unread post/how many new posts' bits always used to be up to date. Also I'd say cookies work by tracking access from particular PCs, rather than needing the user to log on. Not the biggest thing in the world but something. somewhere has definitely changed...

What I've noticed is that, since the update, you get logged out every time you use a different PC. Previously, all PCs that you used would stay logged in, and hence the count of new posts was correct, whichever machine you used. I suspect this may be part of the issue.
